  • Lots of questions...

Hi, sorry to keep posting, I'm just very inquisitive and would like to find out as much information as I can😊.
    1. What's the timetable like e.g. Do you get free periods, what time does the day start and end, is the week Monday-Friday as normal schools, and are you able to go home on weekends?
    2. How early do you have to apply for sponsorships for September 2014 intake?
    3. What sort of extra-curriculum activities are on at the college, as I do a lot of sport, so do they have a gym, sports hall etc.

Any information is very helpful, thanks😊

    Hi!

From what I've gathered, sports is your own thing to organise. Most unis give Wednesday afternoons off for it, but Warsash at least doesn't. I play hockey and sail, so my plan is to find a local club for both as soon as I'm settled in.

Weekends are your own thing, but it's been suggested to us by teachers that we don't go home too often, because you're more likely to get homesick, the last thing you want (apart from seasickness) in this line of work! You'd miss out on a lot of things happening around college as well, and you're bound to have plans with your mates anyway!

Can't really say much about the timetable, I believe it's fairly 9 to 5, with gaps to go do WORK in!

Hope this helps, but don't take my wors for it! Hopefully one of the guys actually doing it will be along soon!

Hi, thanks for that, yeah, I won't be going home every weekend, just some to see family and friends back home 😊

        1. Quick change it to 'study periods' before Hatchorder notices!

If it's anything like Warsash then yeah you get 'periods in which there are no timetabled classes', especially if you're on the FD; HND seem to have what amounts to nearly a normal school day in terms of hours. As the workload picks up you will be actually spending a lot of these periods studying (shock horror)!

        2. Depends who you're applying to. Each company has different periods. Maersk had already received over 750 applications that met the criteria by August, for September 2014! BP last year opened applications around Christmas time and others were in between and later. SSTG and Clyde do interviews year round as far as I can tell.

        3. I've heard there's lots of kayaking, sailing, archery etc to do round there, from blogs and things. Even heard rumour that some of it's free, but not too sure about that. Hopefully someone from the college will be able to tell you about it. If you end up at wma then there's a watersports centre on site that does powerboating, sailing (dinghy and keelboat), jet skiing, and kayaking. There's also a gym on campus for weight/cardio buffs and a lovely beach to go on walks and munch on the blackberries that seem to grow all along it

South Tyneside college used to have a wednesday morning off for the staff meeting etc but some genius within the college came up with the idea of having the staff meeting on a Friday afternoon, which means the deck school shuts at 12! Result!! I'm on the HND course just now and I get the aforementioned Friday afternoon, and I have 2 classes off on a Thurs, other than that i'm in every other day/class.

As for extra-curricular stuff, it's "paddle your own" so to speak. To keep myself busy I'm an instructor at the sea cadets two nights a week and I do jujitsu one night a week, I also threaten to join the Gym every week, but I haven't actually done it yet, and if the weathers decent I go out on my bike and strava around the place. I also have a helthy alcohol habbit, but I thin your a bit young for that :P

Does that mean I'm too late to apply for FD? I didn't see anything saying recruitment was open! D:

Haha recruiting is never opened for Maersk mate :P I sent an application in July of 2009 and got the "your details will be held on file" dismissed it and went back to my boring job in car insurance, then in February they wrote to me and asked me to go for an interview

1)Timetable in phase 1 at fleetwood is pretty busy, lessons are 3 hours long, get 2 or 3 free gaps per week! 9-4 lessons, the phase 1's may have flag duty depending on the rota! You can go home at weekends but there isn't much point, got to socialise with people you going to be spending the next 3 years pretty much together with!

                        2) I got offered my position in October 2011 for September 2012!

                        3) loads of kayaking, swimming, badminton and football in the evenings! For sports, you have 3 hours scheduled in your timetable per week where you MUST go with the group and do circuits, archery, kayaking, football etc. I know of people who have money deducted from pay because they didn't attend! And tbh it's a good laugh?
