  • Car at fleetwood

I'm starting in Sept at Fleetwood and my car insurance has just come up for renewal, Do i really need a car up in Fleetwood? What's the public transport like up there as down here it's shocking!

How close are shops and the closest gym?

    Cheers

    Re: Car at fleetwood

Town centre is about 40 mins walk from the college, or 15 on a bike, buses also run fairly frequently. To get to Blackpool there's regular trams (assuming they're running and not repairing the track as they were doing for the whole of my first phase) and busses, and a taxi home at 4 in the morning costs ?20-25. A lot of people do take their cars, so getting a proper parking space during the day is a bit of a scrum, although there is an additional parking plot on the field, gets a bit muddy in winter though. There's a gym not too far away, though most of my coursemates just went for a jog in the mornings instead (while I lazed in bed for as long as I could!)

Ahh cool i think you've persuaded me to ditch the car :L ?2000 for insurance is just too much to be honest it would be cheaper to go by taxi everywhere!

Just out of curiosity, is there anywhere to leave a bike on site?

I used to leave mine under the archway between the courtyard and the front that faces the field. Never locked it up there, though I wasn't living on campus then, I was only in during the day. Other people lock theirs to the rails outside the front entrance, but there's no protection from the wet there. There's several places really, but I would recommend having a good lock, especially if your bike's a nice one. (Had mine for at least 18 years, still works fine, but I doubt anyone would want to nick it!)

There is a bike shed for those who are staying in halls. Trams aren't running atm, and haven't been the whole time since I started in january. I heard rumours that they will be finished with all the work in july, but it still seems a bit of a mess right now. The car is quite nice to get out of fleetwood sometimes...

Ahh cool is the bike shed undercover? Yeah i know what you're saying about the car and i think it will be horrible to give mine up but if you think ?2000 insurance then tax, petrol, tires, MOT. For the times when i want to get out it's going to be cheaper to just pay for a taxi And i cycle alot now as it is, so cycling seems like the solution to me!

One last question, what's the public transport like in the area? Buses and the trams and stuff for getting about?

Thanks for all the help so far

There's a bus into Fleetwood and one into Blackpool every 10 minutes during the day and every 30 minutes later in the evening up until 11. The trams are every 20 minutes or so, and go on later, but tend to either close or run a reduced schedule out of the holiday season. It's about ten minutes on the bus to Fleetwood, 30-40 minutes to Blackpool, and about the same on the trams.
OOW, Chart. Last fix, f*ckin' awful fix, puts us at worst two miles port of track, on Greenock High Street, just outside Woolies.
