Hi All ! I start at Fleetwood on the 6th of Feb on the HND and I was just wondering what then is to do of an evening at the collage and during weekends and how close is the campus to local shops and stuff? Also I was wondering how many of the cadets to stay at collage most weekends because am coming from London and it isn't practical for me to go back and forth unless I pass my driving test.

Re: Extracurricular activities
Big Bob and Just Ben,
In terms of stuff to do 'after hours', there's surprisingly quite a bit to do...
You've got the gym in college which, if you don't already know, has a small multi gym and a few weights and a fairly massive hall which you can use to your heart's content for running around and playing badminton and stuff, there's also nets for basketball if that floats your boat. If you find you need something else a bit more substantial, then the YMCA gym is just up the road on the front in Fleetwood (it's not far if you've got a bike or you're willing to bribe somebody with a car). There is a sailing lake complete with its own fleet of boats, if you're a yachtie or dinghy sailor then get yourself down to the yacht club on Skipool Creek which is a good place to spread your name about. Evenings are evenings at the college, you've got the bar open 7-11pm Mondays to Thursdays, the various pubs and "club" in Fleetwood which are actually a good laugh if you get enough people together and go, or the big tv, pool table and table-tennis table. There is a dart board but you have to supply your own equipment for this.
At weekends, you're on your own really as everywhere at college shuts (including the bar unfortunately!), but it doesn't mean there isn't anything else to do (even though it is Fleetwood). You find you spend extended periods of time shopping either in Blackpool which is good when the trams are on because it's only 15-20minutes down the front or at the cinema in Cleveleys which has all the latest stuff on. Obviously Blackpool comes with its own varying levels of entertainment so make of it what you will
On my phase (September 2010 intake) a lot of people actually stayed at college over the weekend so you can get quite a bit going on at weekends, but just be prepared that towards the end of the phase (like now) people will be going home to drop belongings back off before sea.
Hope this is some use to you guys, and enjoy it...

No, they're not complusory, sailing on the lake is for the first phase though. Things have changed a bit there now, there's a massive overhaul of the college buildings going on, including the sports hall being re-appropriated by the library, it was part way through when I left earlier this month, so I can't tell you what the new facilities will be like. The pool will still be there though, you'll have to jump into it in your first week probably, and then again for the short courses. It's kept quite warm though, which is nice.
