  • Clyde Cadets / First Month Pay & Accom

Just got my joining instructions from Clyde and was a bit gutted to see not only do we not get a pull pay-day till 24th Sept, we have to cough up the cash for the first month's accommodation. Bummer.

Seems as I'm skint, I wonder if the Halls will accept a drawing of the money as payment. Or perhaps I could pay them by writing a rap song about the money. Any more suggestions would be appreciated.

Note : I am not actually very good at writing rap songs.

Loool, Alright mate, got my joining instructions aswell.

I know that is a total bummer bout the first months wage thing. I am needing to save my last months pay from my current job to last me 2 months & oay for 1 months accommodation .

Trying to sell my car aswell to help along with this. Looks like it could be a sober few months ahead.

Not sure yet. I selected Graig, Africa Express and Gulf Offshore on the application form.

Right, have you looked into being able to get some financial assistance from the government.

If you're from England check out http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Educatio...ance/index.htm and put in a claim for a "Maintenance Loan" at the very least, possibly even a grant if you're willing to disclose sponsorship allowance figures and other such delightfully dull and necessary information.

Also you should be eligible for a student bank account which normally comes with an overdraft facility that you could dip into to cover your initial outgoings, whilst balancing that with future income. Joy of the student bank account is you tend to get 0% interest on it whilst a student.

The student bank account with an overdraft was what I was thinking. Not too happy about it though as Ive never been a fan of being in debt, interest free or otherwise. A means to and end though ey?

That student finance from the govt looks interesting though.....ill deffo get on to that.

                  Cheers for the advice.

Yeah, debt is always a last case scenario but sometimes a necessary evil.

Best of luck finding the funding!

Looks like the Engineers get paid in the first week at Glasgow, Deck have to wait until the end of September because they start a week later. Think there's gonna be a few jealous looks across the bar come mid Sept as the latter are supping their free coke refills....

It is unfortunate though - I have heard a lot of the other deck cadets saying they have the same problem money wise. All I would suggest is sell everything you can before you consider taking on debt. I sold my car last month on the basis that the transport links at GCNS are alright. Tube stations a 5 min walk away and that will get you everywhere you want to go (and to Ibrox ) + your just over the bridge from the centre. Train links to Liverpool ain't great, but you can still get there reasonably quick on a Virgin train then change at Preston (i think??).

Yeah Engineer student get paid at the end of the first week, but it's just one weeks pay (if that). Feel bad for the Deck cadets though, they really get the sticky end of the stick.

I checked out some of the government student finance schemes and it seems like because we are on a paid sponsorship we are ruled out for most grants/loans. Still waiting to speak to an advisor to establish whether there is some grey area to be found.

Oh and Vulcan...... those are some badaass rhymes.

That sounds like a mix between a sea shanty and hip hop. I s'pose you'll be hangin' with yo' riggers on the poop deck, paintin' and chippin', trippin cuz you cain't get no respeck. Prayin' you get paid off not laid off, and not felt up by the USCG, singin' like a Bee-Gee, and doin' birds and not bird and potting turds like Richard Madoff... etc...
