  • Which campus?

    Hey folks,

Looks like I'm going to be starting in Glasgow in January, but I haven't had any college info through yet and won't for a couple of months I don't think, so I have a pretty basic question. Which campus are the classes taught at? I know in the past it'd've been at the Nautical College, but since the merger I'm not sure where they'd be. Is it on Hanover St in the main City College building?

Yeah Riverside Campus, although it is currently a building site so I wouldn't be surprised if they had to move things around a bit at some point during your cadetship.

Thanks chaps/chapettes. I come from Lanarkshire and still stay there, so I'm just trying to figure out which halls I should be looking at or if it'd be worth staying at home during my college phases.

I live in Hamilton. It's definitely worth doing halls for first phase. Both for convenience and too make friends. Also some companies require it.
Saint Lukes (student flats) is definitely preferable to halls but is only available for those over 18 . If they haven't demolished the halls yet, were talking about it when I went to sea.

I'm from Hamilton too o.O will send you a PM haha.

I'd thought that and I do wanna go for halls for my first phase for that reason. I had been looking at collegelands and blackfriars and places like that because I thought it might've been the hanover street building, but St Lukes definitely seems like the best option if it's Riverside.

Alcatraz is currently being pulled down so you will have to stay in St Luke's or if there's no spaces then they will put you up in Collegelands I believe.

St Luke's is probably the best option as it's a two minute walk to the college a opposed to Collegelands which is a bit further away. Although with Alcatraz being demolished I think spaces are at a premium just now so you probably want to be quick.

WAs told before we left first and final phase cadets will be garunteed a space everyone else is on their own. Have they actually started the tearing down then?

Well they had handed over the keys and everyone had moved out the last time I saw it, whether they have got round to the demolition yet I'm not sure. Either way, no one will have to be subjected to staying in it anymore. Thankfully.

I take it by Alcatraz you mean the square block, by the river, between the main college building and the railway arches?

Was a dump 20 years ago when I stayed there, can't imagine it had gotten any better since then, I'm surprised that it lasted that long.
                        Go out, do stuff

That's the one. I stayed in it for a month and it was by far and away the worst student accommodation I have ever stayed in. And I have stayed in several.

Pretty sure it hasn't been decorated in those 20 years either. My room had that lovely sharp artex stuff on the walls. I think that was popular at some point in the 70s.

When I walked past last week they had removed a load of the windows and doors, but that was all I could see. Mind you, with these demolitions it is the prep work that takes the longest, so maybe they will start moving faster soon.

Fancy coming along to drink and dance on top of the rubble?
