September 2011 - Accommodation

Hey everyone,

I am studying the Deck Cadet PD, at Glasgow with Clyde Marine.

I was advised by both Clyde and Glasgow to stay in the catered accommodation (Alcatraz). Although, I have heard that the self-catered accommodation is much better?

What is everyone studying? And what accommodation are you guys opting for?

Hey Craig,

Am studying deck pd with sstg. i'd prefer to stay in self catered however am going into catered, have heard all about alcatraz however having ?300 to spend on anything i want every month compared to whatever is left over from ?300 a month due to food has led me to choose catered. Plus i'll only be in catered until phase 3 and i reckon i'll manage

I was thinking the same as Tim. But am 25 have heard catered has a curfew which makes me think it will be full of 17 year olds.

If it is full of 17year olds you can still live in the joy that you can stay out later than them

it is however if your under 18 your curfew is earlier than everyone over 18's as far as i am aware. If your under18 you have to get a parent/gardian to write a .etter to college for you if you want it extended

I find the idea just ridiculous if your old enough to go off to college you ought to be mature enough to decide how late you want to stay out.

i find it shocking that we are learning how to navigate and maintain million pound vessels and yet we aren't allowed to manage how late we are out till in the evening, it just seems pointless.

it doesn't specify times on info sheet i got with application for accommodation. Just says it is dependant on age and course taken,

I know it seems pointless but there is reason to it. On board you are subject to certain rules, they seem stupid as well. More specifically, when at sea as a watchkeeper you can spend some of your time really tired, especially at first before your body gets used to the up and down rest of a ship.

I think the college is trying to get you used to getting enough sleep and having a set down time like you would have to set yourself onboard. You can be in breach of international laws if you're fatigued on watch. Otherwise you might have a collision with a multi-million pound ship and here's the inside scoop:

If you have a crash it will at least be partly YOUR fault and YOU will be held personally responsible. There has never been a collision where one party was entirely right and another was entirely wrong. The colregs are written so you would be in breach of several rules after a collision.

Saying that I've never had a cerfew as such, that was enforced on board the ship. I can see the point, but I sympathize I would imagine it feels a little silly. Are you in phase 1? I would assume that it will change after your first phase or maybe even half way through.

am going into phase 1 in september. I can understand why it is extremely important especially for deckies to get some decent sleep everyday while on ship, i just think that it is pointless having curfew during the college phases, that is probably down to my biased opinion that most people are mature about how much sleep they get. E.g. Staying out partying till idea 5 when college starts at nine is not a good idea.

As far as i'm aware the curfew stays in place as long as you are in the catered accommodation. Have sent a email to gcns to find out for definite.
