  • Money for shore leave

In my stupendous ignorance, I need to know: do all ships carry pursers/Chief Stewards, allowing you to withdraw local currency in cash from them at every port which will be deducted from your pay???
(This is my Dad's information, but this was back in the 70's )

    Or

Do you use cards now, and if so what do you require? I asume it would have to be credit cards in which case do you get good rates of interest or interest free overdraft schemes- or maybe use internet banking to repay the credit within the time limit from a local internet cafe, etc.??????????

If the above is the case, what/who do you recommend?

Many thanks for putting up with this seemingly obvious question.

    Will

as far as i know from my own inquiries... you can draw from your salary/allowance in ackers... you either sort it with the old man/purser/chief steward who then puts it through to HR

      apologies- 'ackers'????
and the issue I'm having with that is do all ships (I'm probably going to be on a small old boxship going to obscure places) have pursers?

no, but they all have an old man with the safe... (you'd get it from him)

ackers is RN slang (picked it up from my dad) for any foreign currency...

Great, so there shouldn't be a great need to access your acount overseas, you can get all the cash onboard with no extra charge exept the exchange rate? If so things will be easier as I may need to change bank which I'll have to do before I send back the personal form to the company.

There are limits as too how much you can draw from your wages and it usually comes out of the next months wages. There is also a limit to the amount of cash that the Old Man will have onboard. Many will just have US Dollars which is easy enough to change in most places. If you want to use your bank account or a credit card abroad then I would have a look at www.moneysavingexpert.com to see which one is best as you get loads of random charges and if you use your card in a couple of different countries in a short space of time then the bank may block it on suspicion of identity fraud. My bank usually gives me a ring before it gets blocked thank goodness!

I heard that rather than having a safe onboard, an agent will meet the ship and as well as getting food, &c. He will also give the purser/Old man the required amount of local currency.

There will be a safe. You have to have an amount of currency onboard as not all agents will be able/reliable enough to bring it onboard. Also the fun medicines will be in the safe with the cash!

Ha ha ha! Being an ex agent myself I know what you mean about forgetting to take cash onboard! I never forgot but my colleagues did Most Captains are good and make sure that there are plenty of dollars onboard for the crew to last a few weeks and just deduct it from your next months salary..
