Hi Rookie! I won't be able to tell you much now because im only just finishing Phase 1 at Fleetwood but I am a cadet sponsored by CalMac, managed by NMM

NMM is the manning services for Stena, Concordia Maritime and a whole host of other companies. Basically they organise the ships. So technically, Stena own NMM not the other way around. If you are wanting to know whether you will be on Stena ships then yes, you definitely will. I've been told that 1st phase cadets don't get put on ferries and are generally put on Tankers, but ill know more on this on thursday, when i hopefully find out my first ship.

Apparently within the Clyde sphere of companies, NMM are one of the best for recruitment post-cadetship. However being a CalMac cadet I was not given the same 2 year contract that the NMM cadets were given.

Like I said, I'll be able to know more when I complete my first sea phase!

There aren't that many NMM cadets on here to be honest, i never knew that much info before starting so I hope ive been some help!

I currently work with NMM within their Stena Bulk Division (4th Eng - 9 months sea time in rank, 2 different Tankers.), How ever I did not complete my cadetship with them. Although my brother is a deck cadet, his first phase he spent 3 months on a PMAX tanker and then 2 month's on a RORO. He enjoyed the tanker but not so much the RORO.

On board we have decent internet, gym's vary from ship to ship, usually there's table tennis, Wallport movie collection (100+ and we get the new releases). Personally I'm doing 2nd's papers using various sources of information, using the gym and smoking to pass the time....

The time passes quickly enough. You'll be okay.

p.s. I believe that NMM intend to take most of there cadets on after training, as they are one of the very few companies which actually run at a loss using the cadet scheme. They also told me during my interview they plan for most British officer to eventually work in the office in Glasgow as superintendents etc...

I'm enjoying working with them and they have treated me fairly so far.

On the tanker he was between Montreal and somewhere in the Baltic, as for the ferry I'm not sure but I think it was in the Mediterranean.

I have just recently completed a cadetship as a CalMac/NMM sponsored cadet at Glasgow College.

I am currently about to take the advanced Oil & Gas tanker courses and then be assigned to the fleet.

In answer to your questions:

1/ The onboard training was decent, a lot of it really depends on you and how much you want to learn. ask questions, work hard etc. If you just sit in the control room and don't really make the effort it can be difficult. I also found the training to depend quite heavily on the other officers on the ship and their style/knowledge/willingness to teach etc. The support offered by NMM while at College is good and can't be faulted, the facilities they have at their offices are also of a high quality.

2/ This is ship dependent, but to summarise on my previous two vessels ( Pmax & LPG tanker) we had a decent gym which included some free weights, a bench press, weights machine, bike and treadmill. We also had a dart board, table tennis, nintendo Wii and a large collection of dvd's. When you are a cadet the best way to pass the time is to concentrate on producing some good reports for your workbook along with system diagrams, going to the gym, watching films and attempting to socialise with some of the other folk onboard.

3/ JC nailed this already

4/ I was lucky in that both tankers I was on were able to get alongside in some reasonable places. I have visited places such as, Montreal, Finland, France, America, India, Qatar, Singapore and China. Please be aware that again this is ship/route dependent. You may find yourself onboard a vessel for 4 months without any shore leave at all, it really is just luck of the draw.

5/ Yes, should be signing the contract shortly.

Thankyou wonder, sounds like a brilliant company, I was taking to a cadet with nmm at the city of glasgow open day and his first trip was between Nigeria and Tokyo so obviously a lot of shore leave on his trip however sounds like their cadets receive great training.

Yeah my pal was on one of the LNG ships between Tokyo and Nigeria and got zero shore leave sadly! Wouldn't really fancy going ashore in Nigeria I guess!

Just quick question for those who are working with Stena or NMM.
Does these companies trains people from the UK ?I mean students who are living in the UK but they are not BRITISH OR are not permanent UK residents and are not EU citizens?have you heard anything like that?
Just i am wandering whether they accept students or cadets who are not eligible for UK SMarT funding.

I'm a cadet with CalMac / NMM and I'm due to start Phase 2 in a few weeks. I was just wondering if anyone could give me any information on what the accommodation is like on board the ships?
I realise that it varies from ship to ship but any information would be appreciated.
