  • Entry To Enclosed Spaces

I'm not sure if this is the right place for it so admin feel free to move it if needs be

I'm due to finish my college phase 1 on the 23/1/15, and start my sea phase.

However I was unable to complete the practical side of the assesment for Entry to Enclosed Spaces due to breaking my wrist the night before the practical. I have completed the theory side to the cert but not the practical so college cant issue the cert :/.

The earliest one they can get me on apparently is Sept of this year! and as you can probably guess I dont want to be sitting around from Jan to September doing nothing!.

So I guess the question is, can I go to sea with out this or am I looking at being back phased?

There's an enclosed space entry certificate?

I wrote much the same thing, and then scrubbed it to save myself the embarrassment of not knowing about some new regulation...

Yes I work for the big blue canoe company.
No I do not report things from here to them as they are quite able to come and read this stuff for themselves.

I've given up trying to keep up - I just attend whatever course company sends me on.

On the basis that several of the rest of us at sea have never heard of it, it isn't a legally required qualification, and you can go to sea. Unless your company requires you to have it.

Sounds like a money spinning course...

I also seem to remember going over Enclosed Space Entry during my tanker and HSE courses constantly (if I have to watch that video of the nutter in the tank with the machine gun, I may just lose the will to live)....

We did it in tanker fam and edh However it's a separate certificate apparently. Just waiting to hear back from college and what they say and then if needs be to speak to my TO

I might be talking complete and utter bollocks, but is the "enclosed space certificate" that you need a maritime-specific one?

If not, if it's that important to you, I'd suggest that you look into having it done yourself through a third party. Lots of places run them, I nearly had to go on one when I worked for an engineering company for when I was doing site visits. Think they cost like 100-150 quid depending on what one you do and where. Not exactly cheap, but if you really need it I'd rather just pay up than have to wait around until September. Again I don't know your exact situation and whether your sponsor would accept it, but worth looking into IMO.

You don't need it to go to sea unless your company ask you to have it specifically. If it is just part of your college course get them to make sure it is included in your next phase at college.
If you can't laugh, you shouldn't have joined!!

Never heard of it and don't have one... I guess I won't be doing the tanks in dry dock then?! (Please god)

I did mine at the end of my Phase 1 at STC, but as far as I'm aware it's not a required course. I remember all the firefighters from the training centre where we did the course moaning that it was a new course and they hadn't been told we were supposed to do it with EEBD's; which they didn't have. So we 'escaped' from the fire training structure with SCBA's instead.

No - you don't need the practical side of the course to go to sea. I'm at Warsash and they only do the theory. You would only need it the company who's ships you are going on demand you to have it.
