I'm curious, how many current or past cadets were successful on their first application for a cadetship?

If you had to apply again how many intakes (ie September and January) did it take?
    30
    First intake
    86.67%
    26
    Second intake
    6.67%
    2
    Third intake

    Forth intake

Several years ago; 1st intake - applied to 3 companies; 2 offered me a job.

Way back in 1992, applied to around 20 companies, had interviews with Clyde Marine, BP and P&O Cruises got offered all three jobs and unfortunately accepted the P&O one.

I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by.....

Back in Spring 2010, I applied to three companies and got invited to interview for 3 companies. I regret not applying to SSTG.

Since a lot of you seem to have had a choice between multiple offers, does that mean the companies are very patient about waiting for people to accept/reject cadetships?
In my previous experience, you only get 7 days to say yes/no to a job offer, but looking at the way the responses to my applications for January 2015 are panning out, assuming the first two companies to have shown an interest in me both offer me a cadetship there will be at least a 3 week gap between the two offers, and if any others get back to me those will probably be even later.

Accept any and all offers that you receive and then decide which one that you want to proceed with.

Places are so oversubscribed that the companies will easily fill places that you accept and don’t take up.

I realise that this sounds like a cynical old git moaning, but it is sadly very true - shipping companies will never show you any loyalty, they will always do what is best for them when it suits them to do it, so forget everything you have ever been taught about playing fair and doing the right thing, do what is best for you and what best suits your own interests.

Just from reading the comments so far I think I've applied to a few more companies than the average. Since I'm applying for the September 2015 I haven't heard anything yet, but all your comments have been a great comfort. I just hope that I too have a multitude of offers to choose from!lol

I think applying to more is a more sensible option these days as demand for cadetship slots is high. I could be completely wrong but considering I was a sixth form dropout and only applied to three companies and still got a place would suggest that it was much easier to get a slot back then.

For sure but don't just copy and paste your application. Tailor it to each company. This need not be to hard. You need to play what I call buzz word bingo. Go to their website read carefully if they say they want a dynamic candidate make sure your CV has the word dynamic in it.
Some recruiters use computer programs for their initial filter of applications.
