  • What are potential hazards at sea?

    So far I've got:

    ?Running aground
    ?Fires
    ?Severe weather conditions
The games are always, repeat, always, being played. But nobody plays the games like me. You just have to be the best.. And I usually am. Same rules apply.

Collision with other ships, collision with ice/debris/small yachts that have no AIS and don't think it's necessary to use nav lights in the middle of the ocean, allision (that's crashing into stationary objects) when in/near port. Asphyxiation caused by entry into a space without sufficient oxygen, food poisoning caused by bad hygiene in the galley/fridges freezers not being maintained properly, piracy, getting caught in a bight of a rope as it runs out, getting hit by a mooring line as it snaps (Don't believe snap back zones, keep MUCH further away!), getting caught in any number of various bits of machinery..... there's more I just want to give someone else a go.

In our first phase we made an alphabetical list of "Ways to die at sea" I suggest you do the same, it's fun, and scarily educational!

Oh and before this puts you off, I can assure you, a life at sea beats life on land any day

I was told explosion was a bigger risk on board than fire, and it cropped up at an interview I went to a few weeks back!

Tired crew pops up as a cause of accidents, frequently mentioned on here.

electrocution, drowning, breaking your back if you fall when working at height without using safety equipment, heat exhaustion when working in hot engine rooms, being gassed by CO2 release.

From first trip experience, slipping down the slippery forward staircases and attempting to catch an unruly sounding tape... bastard thing... won't be doing them again! basically, keep your eyes open at all times!

Been there, done something very similar. Was carrying too much of something, slipped on some stairs, ship rolled so missed all the stairs on the way down and landed with a thud square on the a*se. I still have issues with it today...

I blame the bees around the sugar we were loading... bulkers, blergh! no rest for the wicked though, was straight back to soundings and gangway watch with a rather mangled shoulder... no problems with it after a week... it'll come back to haunt me though, i know!

How common is piracy these days? Has any one on here experienced/seen it?

I found that it seems to be slowly dying out tbh, my ship went to Nigeria twice, which is a high risk area, and took all the necessary precautions to prevent it and had a few dodgy looking fishing boats eyeing us up with searchlights when drifting off Lagos but never saw messages warning about piracy attacks in the area. One of my classmates was attacked off Peru/Ecuador, but at soon as the pirates realised they had been spotted, they scarpered apparently. Fact is, I wouldnt worry too much about it. while it can happen, it's extremely unlikely that you could be dragged into it. Most companies have policies to prevent it, such as my ship kept out of the high risk area until berthing in port was 100% confirmed. Of course this is only my opinion, see what the big guns of the industry have to say about it...

I've had at least 1 piracy distress alert come through on the MF/HF DSC. So it does still happen, but how frequent it is is difficult to say, I mostly only get DSC alerts that have been sent out on high frequencies (cos everyone is so far away from us!) plus the media hype has died away....
