Debating taking my SOG Paratool with me, which as an engineer could stil come in handy. Already taking a LED Lenser T7 torch, which I reckon's bright enough to bore a hole right through any ginger I should happen across whilst it's switched on.

I've got a small locking Gerber and a Penknife, they seem to do the job both at college and when I was with the Reserves.

The ships do provide shifters but only 2 or 3 usually and they always go walkies so it's always handy to have your own personal one

Or you could always, ya know, go and get the right sized feckin' spanner instead of rounding the nuts off with a shifter.

I used to always carry a lockback knife on the ship, or one in a plastic casing so you can get it out quickly in case a rope or the likes gets caught around your feet. No problems at airports as long as you pack it away and don't wave it around It isn't classed as an offensive weapon as its work related. Only thing you need to be careful of is knifes with wooden handles as I wasn't allowed to bring a wooden handled knife into Australia due to quarantine. Ships will sometimes provide knifes to crew if they are mandatory, like on the anchor handlers when catching buoys you HAD to carry a knife on deck. Guess the thinking is you're going to take better care of your own equipment and know how it all works/where the tools are - useful in a hurry! I've carried a multi tool in my hold baggage before without any issues

I've heard praise for the various Leatherman tools... If you have the cash, SOG are a good brand too!

Hi there,

I am currently on my final trip as an engine cadet and I don't have a knife or a multi-tool and personally I don't think either would be that useful or necessary.
One thing that is an essential is a Shifter, I got myself a Bahco 8Inch shifter for this trip and I use it all the time. They are pretty cheap from Amazon, think I paid around ?15 for mine, there are other makes available but every engineer I have worked with uses Bahco.

A decent torch is also handy as the ones in the engine room are usually rubbish, generally they should be intrinsically safe for tankers but this doesn't seem to apply much in the engine room and is more of a deck thing/cargo tanks etc. Plenty of the guys just have a normal pocket torch,nothing to fancy.
