  • Appearances at college and at sea?

I've read a few discussions about visible tattoos at sea and things, but I'd like to know about appearance in general. What are they like at college? Is it very much, single stud earring in each lobe and all hair off the collar? Or are things like piercings or dyed hair ok? Again same questions but at sea is it different?

College: (Fleetwood) In Phase 1 they were pretty into uniform being all proper which did mean girls always had to have their hair tied back and single stud earrings, top button done up and such. People got moaned at for things like having a brown belt and non College jackets etc. In Phase 3 they really don't seem to care about anything at all.

Sea, I don't work on a cruise ship so I guess that will be different but on ship it was just be clean and have clean clothes/boiler suits and that's all good. When we did wear uniform for pilotage or in port it was just a case of looking nice and presentable.

At sea and at College I've never seen anyone be bothered about visible tattoos.

At Shields..... as long as you have a shirt and tie on, its pretty much fair game. Guy in my class used to wear black combats, shirt and tie, NATO Wooly Pully jumper etc and it was fine. As I cadet I used to wear my uniform but with a hoodie of a dark colour and no one cared, sometimes I even just wore a t-shirt under my hoody and dress trousers......... uniform and sandals/crocs is also a favourite of some people Uniform standards at Shields aren't high, although I know other colleges like to pretend they are the royal navy and have roll calls, uniforms and putting the flag up etc.... Shields isn't one of them!!!

At sea I sailed on one vessel where uniform had to be worn Mon-Sat during the hours of daylight on the bridge and at meal times. Sunday was no uniform day, My first ship was just uniform for dinner and when the pilot was on board, and then the rest was the sexy blue maersk boiler suit's while the pilot was on...... Other than that i've worn jogging bottoms/shorts/onesie on the bridge

Chiefy will tell you, although Danish flagged is usually just blue boiler suit for the pilot. It's upto the Captain how he wants his crew dressed, I've been on a ship where we had to wear uniform to dinner until the old man changed then we could wear our own gear.

Na, I never. I can guess who it was though, although I didn't know he was in the HCMM, I must ask him as he does spend a lot of time in London

to be honest I dont like to see it (but thats personal nothing more) BUT tied up and out of the way should be ok, some companies "may" judge you not sure what the cruise companes would think but as they are image based then might be a point aganst you if they have to chose between 2 of you.

The main thing is your comfort levels in a hot sweaty engine room, that and rotating machinery and so.

                        So yes and no ;-)
                        Trust me I'm a Chief.

Yes I work for the big blue canoe company.
No I do not report things from here to them as they are quite able to come and read this stuff for themselves.
