Its obviously great if you can attend to get a flavour of the place and stuff but I certainly wouldn't spend loads of money travelling the length and breadth of the country to attend all of them. Especially when, as you say, you might not even get a choice where to go. Add into that the fact it might well be a lot of the same companies at all of them, it might get a bit repetitive. I never attended an open day prior to my cadetship, neither did most of my mates as far as I know. We all did alright.

They are good to go to, as you get to see a bit of the college, speak to lecturers, current cadets and sponsoring companies- they aren't the be all and end all, but if you've got a fairly short trip or are unsure about something I would recommend them. It cemented my decision to apply after attending an open day, but I don't know if it's necessary to attend them all, one is probably enough to give you an idea of what you're getting into....

Would it be possible to arrange a private tour around a specific college once you know for sure you are being sent there? I know this would be just a few weeks once starting but it's more sensible than going to every single one and trying hopelessly to remember all the details of each one months before you are actually told for sure?

Generally, if you don't really get a choice, does it matter what the college is likeYou'll get a tour during the first week if not first day
?Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn?t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.?

I only posted for info, as I see it if you have one close at hand worth a look around, find out about the courses, and what it involves, may help decision making on HND or FD for some. Shows some interest for interviews, adds some knowledge to the process of training.
May help some decide between deck and engine. All very well reading things but sometimes a conversation introduces questions which might not occur otherwise. Possibly helping towards making a right choice for an individual.
As we know cadets often don't have a choice of where or what they study, but being well informed, they can at least say at interview why they have a preference. Some of course are given a choice.
Those open days with companies present, offer other opportunities to have conversations where by sectors which they may have excluded they may after discussion find interesting.
How many times do we see posts saying, I want to work on a cruise ship or even more specific only one cruise company, or only one training provider? Quite frequently, it is better in my mind to gather information to make a well informed decision, or at least realise the competition is fierce, so if they want to be specific they need to raise their game to achieve it, even then they could be very disappointed.
I don't see you have anything to lose by going but could gain some useful information, may get an interview, and as recruiters are there at least make your name known.
