  • Work book reports/signatures

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen,I am a 4th phase engine cadet, nearing the end of my second and last sea phase. Just a quick question regarding these reports for your training book, do you have to have each report individually signed and stamped by an officer?

It's not essential none of my reports are signed or stamped and my company just said if you can get them signed and stamped they would look better, but its not essential and not an MCA requirement

No it's not necessary. I just got the front cover of my workbook stamped and signed for each ship I was on but even that isn't strictly necessary I don't think. As it turned out, the examiner didn't even ask to see it during my orals so I just kept it in my bag. Might as well just have not bothered!

I always got every report signed and stamped - working on the theory of diversion (the stamps drew the attention away from the content!)
        Pilotage - It's just a controlled allision

I got all of mine stamped and signed. It's not necessary, but it gives the officers the chance to look over your written work, which helps them gauge your attitude to work, and it can help start a discussion on a matter you've recently learnt about, often leading to you learning even more.

I always had my signed as my first ship had a dedicated training officer (not just the mate, his only job was to train cadets) and he insisted on reading and signing every report, so I just carried on the trend, none are stamped though. I handed in my workbook and the examiner gave me it back about 10 mins later, so they don't read it too much :P

Rather annoyingly on my current ship the computers have been set up not to allow USB sticks. So I can't even print any of the reports I've written let alone get them signed or stamped.

Yeah we had that on one of my ships to avoid viruses being spread. Which was bizarre as it didn't allow USB sticks but it did allow portable hard drives....so I just used that instead. I believe there was something you could install on your USB stick to verify that it was safe and allow the computers to recognise it, but I never did figure it out.

I didn't get anything signed on my first or second ship, but I did on the last ship (as I was told to)....
I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by.....

Can you email them to yourself?

Maersk network computers aren't on the interweb usually, although you could e-mail it from your laptop to the bridge PC and then print it, but that'll use some internet, but if the old man agrees and your internet is in abundance... I'd prob do it on the last day of each month

The computer that has interweb on it has no printer. Will just have to print when I get home

Three monkeys escaped from the zoo. One was caught watching TV, the other playing football, and the third one was caught reading this quote!

Why are you asking this question now, near the end.

                            Advice to other cadets.

Sort your work books out early! Not at the end of your final sea phase, otherwise you might get sacked like a cadet did from my company, as he ran out of time to near complete his book.

You don't need to finish it 100%, some times depending on ship its not possible. BUT you won't get 50% of it done in two or three weeks, and learn from it for your orals properly!

Are you talking about your cadets operations workbook, or their MNTB training book, because I would say everyone must have the book MNTB book 100% finished, I've seen a few people (my flatmate included) who were missing one task, and the MCA refused to issue an NOE without confirmation from the company/college lecturer that they were competent in this task. I know engineers are diff with task books as it contains stuff on steam ships etc, but deckies must have everything signed
