Hello Ladies and Gentlemen,I am a 4th phase engine cadet, nearing the end of my second and last sea phase. Just a quick question regarding these reports for your training book, do you have to have each report individually signed and stamped by an officer?

No it's not necessary. I just got the front cover of my workbook stamped and signed for each ship I was on but even that isn't strictly necessary I don't think. As it turned out, the examiner didn't even ask to see it during my orals so I just kept it in my bag. Might as well just have not bothered!

I always had my signed as my first ship had a dedicated training officer (not just the mate, his only job was to train cadets) and he insisted on reading and signing every report, so I just carried on the trend, none are stamped though. I handed in my workbook and the examiner gave me it back about 10 mins later, so they don't read it too much :P

Yeah we had that on one of my ships to avoid viruses being spread. Which was bizarre as it didn't allow USB sticks but it did allow portable hard drives....so I just used that instead. I believe there was something you could install on your USB stick to verify that it was safe and allow the computers to recognise it, but I never did figure it out.

Advice to other cadets.
Sort your work books out early! Not at the end of your final sea phase, otherwise you might get sacked like a cadet did from my company, as he ran out of time to near complete his book.
You don't need to finish it 100%, some times depending on ship its not possible. BUT you won't get 50% of it done in two or three weeks, and learn from it for your orals properly!....
