  • First Accommodation payment

Hey guys, I'm a cadet with CMT due to start in September and I just got the email about booking the accommodation and stuff, it says my first payment needs to be paid by the end of august and it's like 2grand ; am I expected to pay that from my own money or will they pay me before this date?

I will send an email to the right people, but since I wont get an answer before the weekend I thought I'd ask you lot, cheers

No idea where you are going, but a) 2 grand seems a bit steep for a deposit, and b)all accommodation costs are your problem!

I would be questioning the 2 grand with the accommodation peoples, Glasgow was nowhere near that when I was there and that is not that far back!! You should be paying monthly, to vaguely co-incide with when you will get paid. Can be a bugger some months as well, just to warn you, as you can end up paying for a 5 week month rent (which you normally pay in advance) yet will only get a 4 week month pay from Clyde Marine, as they pay in lieu!! This was brought up with them several times, but basically they don't care.

2 Grand? Where the heckedy heck are you staying!? As I recall, the deposit was something like ?150 odd for the HoR? (and it wasn't that far back for me either)

You have to pay for rent in advance on the 1st of every month, rent is on a per week basis and CMT fund nothing towards it, you have to pay it out of your subsistence allowance.
I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by.....

        2 grand was a round up, it's 1890 quid for 18 weeks

its meant to be st lukes in glasgow

the deposit is 300 quid and it will be removed from the 1890

would it be safe to assume some of the training allowance is essentially to pay for the accommodation?

I thought i'd be paid monthly and pay my accommodation in due course, but its says i need to pay this 1890 before the end of august, when i don't think ill be given my training allowance by then, which is understandable because i havent actually started training

Nah, you've misunderstood. ?1890 will be the cost for the full phase, however you do not have to pay this up front!!

You can pay monthly (according to the website ?105 per week), and they require a deposit of ?300 when you make the booking. So basically, ?300 now when you book, then you will need to pay ?420 when you move in (i.e first months rent).

Glasgow/St Lukes also only charge you for the phase you are there, so you don't pay for when you go to sea, just so as you are aware.

However the halls are ****e!! For what you pay, compared to what you get, is not brilliant, but then I suppose same can be said for most Uni/College Halls!!

Best of luck, and rest easy knowing you are close enough to campus to wake up at 8.55 in time to roll into class for 9am

Ohh, and before I forget, here is the link to the page I just found:

Thanks man, I've probably just looked really thick, but I'd like you to see what has confused me and still confuses me although you have just given me a reasonable explanation, this was on the form I need to fill in and send away - what gets me is it say 1890 payable on or before 30/08/13 i think im being thick but idk haha

              Current fees from August 2013 for a 41 week contract: 25/08/13 - 08/06/14Single ?105.00 per week
?1890.00 payable on or before 30/08/13 (18 weeks)
              ?1470.00 payable on 06/12/13 (14 weeks)
              ?945.00 payable on 21/03/14 (9 weeks)
Other flexible payment arrangements are available on request. Payment must be made in accordance with the Residential Agreement. For longer leases the extra weeks may be added on to the first and last instalment due in September and March.
ALL PAYMENTS MUST BE MADE BY DIRECT DEBIT.

Ach, St Luke's isn't actually all that bad. Believe me, I've stayed in some real hell holes in the past and St Luke's is nothing like any of them....

Unless the rather rude (but attractive) accounts wifey has finally lost the plot, it's unlikely they're going to want that up front. It will probably be on a monthly basis....

I presume that is the Accommodation peoples preferred method for charging, however just ring them up and ask to pay monthly. I seem to vaguely recall seeing something similar when I was first there, but that is roughly 5 years ago now, so my memory is rather sketchy!!

Remember of course that now it is the City of Glasgow College the emphasis has been pushed more towards 'regular' students, and less geared to cadets they way the old GCNS used to be. But I know guys still there who are paying monthly, and that used to be the way of it when I was there. The biggest "supplier of cadets as it were is Clyde Marine, and they have paid monthly for a long time. COGC and Clyde Marine are very cosy (or they were when I was there), so things are available geared towards cadets.

If its the same very attractive one I am thinking of she was always perferctly pleasant to me!

Anyway I stayed in St Lukes until a few weeks ago and although I was lucky enough to not have to pay my own accomodation most of my mates did. You can definitely pay it monthy. I've never heard of anyone having to pay it in one go, that would be ridiculous (unless you are rich). Also the deposit being ?300 is hilarious. It was ?200 last year and I'm pretty sure it was ?50 the year I started. Don't know what inflation calculator they are using....

I've stayed in quite a few student accomodation blocks in the past and I thought St Lukes was pretty nice as student accomodation goes. As anyone who had the misfortune to stay at Alcatraz (which is currently being torn down) will confirm. Believe they are currently in the process of renovating St Lukes on a very gradual basis as well.

But aye, give them a phone or an e-mail and ask to pay it monthly. I'm sure this won't be a problem.
