  • College accomodation

    Hi there, new to the forum and signed up for this one question, hopefully its in the right area;

    I have searched for an answer to this but found conflicting information. I have an interview with Clyde Marine Training in 2 weeks and am wondering who actually pays for the accommodation whilst at the colleges?

    If it's me, I am indeed buggered.

    Cheers for any help,
    It was like that when I got here.

      Most companies (certainly Clyde marine) require you to pay it yourself out of your training allowance.

        Bugger,

        Is there any funding you can get for the accomodation?

          If any current or past cadets could answer this that'd be great;

          So to any past or current cadets, in your experience of being at these colleges, if I had say ?150 a month leaving my account for various bills etc, is it possible to complete the course or would I simply have no cash for basic sustenance and needs?

          Cheers

            Hey mate, im going to Warsash there accomodation and food is ?104 per week for 5 days food accomodation all bills included leaving me with about ?130 left over. Doesnt go far. I was at Solent Uni (part of Warsash) and was eligible for bursaries there not sure if same applies for Warsash though.

              Ah right, so ?104 isn't the end of the world with meals aswell, I assume Warsash is pretty dear on accom compared to others or are they all relatively the same?

              at the 700 or so you get from clyde that should leave me with about the same post bills if I absolutely hammer down my debt over the next 2 months.

              So with the bursary was that from uni or whilst you were a deck cadet?

              According to student finance and from what I've read on here, I could be eligible for a student loan in phase 3 which is much cheaper interest than my credit cards so I'd be stupid not to get it. Looks like Phase 1 would be the only beans and toast time,

              cheers,

                Also, does the sponsor company pay for all travel costs to and from college etc?

                  My company (SSTG) paid for travel costs for offical college holidays but I can't comment on what other companies do. No companies pay daily travel expenses as far as I am aware.

                  I think most colleges are around the same money wise. At Glasgow I think it was around ?400 a month (self catering) and I think my mates with Clyde had about ?200-?300 left over after paying that. I was lucky enough that my company paid for my accomodations costs, although they no longer do this for cadets starting now.

                  Don't know of anyone who got a bursary although I know a couple of people who took out student loans. I think there were hardship funds and stuff available from the college if you were really struggling but again I don't know anyone who took advantage of that.

                    Well that clears up alot,

                    Just one last question, if your say with an offshore company, for your first sea phase, if its only say 6 weeks with a couple of weeks leave, how does it work after that? do you go straight back to college or back off for another stint at sea? does everyone go back to college at the same times or is it split over when people are coming back from different phases?

                    Cheers

                      Nah everyone goes back to college at the same time. So for example my first sea phase was around six months. I got a month off, then went away for four months then got a month off at the end before going back to college. My mates in the north sea maybe did 6 weeks on 2 weeks off or 8 and 2 or whatever their company could get them for the whole of the six months, then we all went back to college together.

                        Ah that clears that up then cheers,

                        One final final questionn! (probably not in the right thread now) my GCSE's all went missing and I can get reprints for all bar RE (its ?40 for a GCSE thats irrelevant) but I did put it on my application, anyone reckon it'll be a problem and if I can just forget about that one and go with the other GCSEs I've got?

                          I would say that you could not worry about the RE one as long as you have the rest (and just explain it away)

                          Regarding the college money, don't forget that during your sea phases you can normally save a bit of cash and that then boosts your pot when you are back at college ( I will never forget the pi** up of first day back on phase 3 as we were all cashed up!) some people got a bit of a loan, got some from bank of parents etc but its still a lot better than getting nothing!
                          Pilotage - It's just a controlled allision

                            I'm a phase 3 engine cadet from Wales. I was eligible for a student loan and maintenance grant when I joined Warsash. I chose only to go for the maintenance grant and I receive about ?2000 every 4 months which definitely goes a long way considering how much we get paid. First phase you have no choice to live on campus but for phase 3 and 5 you have the choice. It all depends on what you live in but definitely worth applying for.

                              So would you be eligible for student finance in phase 5 or the 3rd year aswell?

                              cheers for the help guys,
