  • Lights and Shapes board

    Hi everyone,

I started this thread http://www.officercadet.com/showthre...d-Shapes-board in order to find a lights and shapes board for my son, like the one I used when I was a cadet. I had already thought if I could not find one I would make one and Young Mariner had the same idea... So.....

My first job was to find all the materials. Then I started building..

First was to have a piece of mild steel laser cut 12" x 8"
    L&S01.jpg

Then paint one side matt black and the other satin white with metal spray
    L&S02.jpgL&S03.jpgL&S04.jpg

Buy some wood and cut it to size, shape it, cut a groove in it and paint with finishing oil which contains a lacquer
    L&S05.jpgL&S06.jpgL&S07.jpg

    Assembly with glue
    L&S08.jpgL&S09.jpg

I had to find some A4 printable magnetic sheets, then layout all the graphics for the buoys, print them, spray lacquer them and cut them out.
    L&S10.jpgL&S11.jpg

I also bought some sheets of coloured magnetic dots for the lights so one side is for buoyage and shapes (Still to be cut out of some black vinyl coated magnetic sheets) and the other is for lights with 10 each of red, white and green dots and 5 yellow dots.
    L&S12.jpgL&S13.jpg

This has taken about 6 hours total to make the three up. I played with buying plates of mild steel and a more expensive option of a magnetic board that is white both sides and only spraying one side.

It works out quite expensive in parts:

    Metal Board ?4.50
    Paint ?3.00
    Wood ?1.00
    White Sheet ?1.60
    Black Sheet ?1.44
    Dots ?2.94
    Oil, thinners, glue, sandpaper ?2.50
    Total
    ?16.98
But I am totally chuffed with the result. I could probably get them made in China for ?3.50! What do people think?

Blimey, praise indeed from such a grumpy one!

Bet you didn't think that a Deckie could be that handy?

The cost is ?17.00 each for the materials. I only put that up there so people could see that they can built one themselves if they want to...

However, I did have to buy 1000m x 660mm of black plastic and 10 sheets of the white magnetic sheet and multiple sheets of 50 dots so my initial outlay was about ?65 including wood, magnets and spray paint. I cannot think of a way to do it cheaper other than approaching a Chinese company and getting them to do it! For example if I buy 10 of the coated magnetic boards the price comes down to ?4.00 each. No doubt I can get metal spray cheaper than ?9.00 a can from Wickes!

I only made three because I was experimenting. I have enough of certain materials to make more if I order some more plates, spray, dots and other bits but I have no idea what they are worth? To me I have loved the challenge but I will not be making a career of it! No doubt now I have done all the design, layout and sourcing then the time taken to make each one drops, but including posting them out to people then the cost hast to be a minimum of ?25, but I don't think people will want to buy them.

That is not to say that I have not enjoyed it though. Worth it all to see if I could do it and make it work.

I'll see how I feel about making some more.

Thank you. No doubt I could do better if I was a Chippie with the wood. Cutting a lengthwish level & vertical cut 20mm deep in a piece of softwood with a handsaw was probably the most challenging bit!
