  • Last Vessel in Orals

Just wondering if anyone could help with some examples of questions I may be asked about my last vessel in OOW Orals?

Will it be mainly stuff relating to the LSA and FFE onboard and safety features of the vessel etc.

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    Mantaforce,

I purposely left this alone as there are others who will have done their orals more recently. ( I did mine in 85!).

As nobody else has answered though I will tell you what happened to me.

When he got onto last ship he focussed on the FFE. He did not want to know what we had on board, as it would be easy to bullcrap the answers, but what he did ask was what the regulations that dictated the requirements. How many extinguishers, hoses, BA sets etc. that we had to carry as a minimum. It was a couple of years since I had done all the regs on what we must carry so I could tell him everything we had, but I could not tell him what the minimum requirements were. Beasted me for 5 mins on it and then told me after I had passed I would need to read up on it again.

Of course I went straight out of his office in Liverpool with my pass certificate in my hand and to the library to look it up! NOT. Could not have cared less at that point - I had a piece of paper with PASS written on it!

Mr Mitchell, Chief Examiner of Mates and Masters in Liverpool in the 80's, if you are reading this I am sorry that this news must come as a disappointment to you.....

Haha, Thank you for the answer. I had been wondering whether he will ask about specifics or just whether the vessel meets the requirements or not and if I know what they are.

With regards to the engine room, for a deck officer, is he likely to ask anything about the specifics of the engines or would just a basic knowledge be ok, such as type and how many etc.

      Thanks again for the reply.

You're college will have past candidates "orals reports" in the library - have a read of them for an idea of what type of questions your local examiners are focusing on at the moment

Personally I was not asked a thing about the engine room. But as Alistair says you can find out what examiners are asking in the here and now not 100 years ago in past oral reports!

Which college are you at? Someone may be able to help you by being more specific about the college or your local examiners.

He shouldn't ask engineering questions, but he might ask about the type of engines and what effects that has, i.e. fixed vs controllable pitch, left vs right handed props, how many air starts, that sort of thing.
