  • Joining ship but AIS data seems to be wrong

Hello, I'm supposed to be joining a ship on monday in a particular port (wont mention which one as this could reveal my identity), but the AIS data online is saying it's in a different port alltogether. This only changed yesterday so it seems to be last minute.

Haven't heard anything from the company as I presume no one is working at the weekend but the problem is I'm joining first thing monday morning when no one is in the office.

Don't panic, the company will sort it out for you.

You don't say what type of ship it is, but if it is carrying cargo it may well be running late, or had an extra cargo last minute, which would delay it.

Follow your instructions as given, the port side will be dealt with the Ship's agent anyway. Just because the instructions say Monday, that is 24 hours!! Two days is enough time to cover a fair distance, and if the ship is not in port when you get there, the agent will give you updated instructions and if needed arrange hotels/taxis/etc.

Ships are fluid on timing, all sorts affect this, you'll get used to it! Joining is no problem, wait until you are due to sign off, and weather means you are three days late into port!!

thanks for the advice! Yes it is a cargo ship.

Just a bit concerning as it has been a lot of hassle and bad luck trying to join this thing!

The company should have provided you with the agents details, so if you're nervous you can contact them and ask them for its ETA and what not...

I would go with the previous advice, follow your joining instructions. If it's a UK join a quick call to the agent just to check might not go amiss, however if you are flying then stick with the plan, not un-common to be hoteled for a day or 2 if things have changed or moved on

Yes I work for the big blue canoe company.
No I do not report things from here to them as they are quite able to come and read this stuff for themselves.
