Glasgow is keeping a hold of my short course certificates until I finish my cadetship.
    Is this the done thing?

Sounds very strange, but glasgow does see to do some very odd things.

I can see that they would want a copy of them for whatever reason but i think you should have the originals. Have you asked them about this?
For example i have all my original certificates and my companies office has a copy of them all, for legal reasons i believe and so they can organise any re-takes for me if & when they expire.

At STC they keep hold of them until Phase 2 because you will need them for joining a ship. I think they keep hold of them purely for safe keeping, not 100% sure though.

What certificates are they holding on to, what stage in the course are you at and is there something you've not paid?
I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by.....

They do this with everyone. You are given the certificates you need to join a ship (PST, PPSR, Basic firefighting, basic first aid) but they don't give you others such as EDH, adv first aid, lifeboat course certificates until you finish. No idea why. Someone one mentioned it could be to do with the fact some certificates can't be officially issued until you have a certain amount of seatime, which you may not have when you actually do the course, so they wait till everyone has their 12 months. That could be nonsense though.

Its exactly as john says I was just wondering if other colleges do the same? if you do need 12 months sea time to issue these certificates or glasgow are just talking nonsense.
I am in phase 3 of PD G man

Some certificates require 6 months sea time, so you do the course but they hold on to them until you have that seatime accrued.

They will also hold on to them if you haven't paid something, library fine, etc. I would go to the folks in the certificates office bit (top floor? main building?) and enquire as to the exact reason they're holding them.

Exactly which certificates are they holding on to and which do they say you need sea time for? SOP is for them to retain most certificates until you complete the course and are fully paid up - that includes stuff like NRAS, Signals, course completion, etc. EDH needs 12 months sea time to issue. Just ask the curriculum leader about it. Is it still Karen?

They should issue your PST, MFA, EFF and PSSC Certificates almost as soon as you've done them because you'll need them for your first ship.

Other certificates, as has been said, require more sea time (e.g. EDH or PSCRB cert.) so even if you've done the short course you may not have the sea time required to be issued the certificate. It depends how the college organises it's timetable which will dictate whether you do the course before you get sea time for it or if you go to sea first before you do the course.

Don't worry, it's not unusual. But what certificates do you think you should be getting that they haven't given you?

                      To boldly go.....

CPSC&RB needs 6 months sea time. EDH needs 12 months. As neither are required until you apply for CoC they will probably hold on to them until the end of your course. I do recall that they issued GMDSS in a more timely manner, but that is administered differently to other college certificates/courses.

We can sit here all day debating on why the certificates are being held, but until the OP gets off his backside and goes and asks either his course leader or the certificate folks then what else can be said?
