  • Fleetwood or South Tyneside?

    Hey guys
I've just been accepted by Bibby and they have given me two choices of colleges. Fleetwood or South Tyneside.

I was wondering which college is best out of the ones listed above?

    thanks

      Stc....
I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by.....

STC my views, only been here a week but the living is crap, youre paying ?120 a week for two meals a day and the showers are rubbish (list can go on :P), today theve even reduced it down what you get in the meal had to pay, 50pence for more veg, all you could get for 4.00 was curry, rice and soup bearing in mind we have a 7.20 limit and its 3.30 for a 5 set breakfast..... Fleetwood may be worse but what youre paying for is bad. At the begging i could get salad, main meal with two veg and chips/potato and dessert/soup.

Education wise weve been here two weeks and it's starting to move now but the beginning is very slow, and seems some lectures dont know what their teaching us yet! that may just be cause theirs still building going on etc. I obviously dunno what fleetwood is like and i am enjoying it here cause of the people but it could be better.....

As for teaching they have actually been okay for what weve done so far, the teachers are defiantly better at explaining things than my old ex-navy teachers i had at my apprenticeship college, although some are saying we have plently of time and even sending us home early where as others are saying the course is hard you'll have no time. But its still early

This is just my point of view, to make it clear the college is good, the living isn't but to meet people you really have to stay in the halls for the first term although i do feel like moving out now!

Well I've been at fleetwood for a few weeks now and so far so good, although im HND deck which they appear to specialise in, where as I hear STC are the college to go for for engineering.

Paying ?110 a week for accomodation, which isnt bad considering the horror stories ive heard from before it was refurbished, though the rooms are a bit poxy, and they've just spent near enough ?9m on the college. as for the food, we get 2 meals a day, they are pretty generous with servings, im always full from the meals and its not bad stuff either; tasty, plenty of choice etc. Gotta say, I'm more than convinced on staying here come phase 3 but its unlikely they'll let me as all the 102 rooms are taken with 'priority students' (ie, phase 1's, phase 3's under 18 and those doing different, outside courses). Though at the end of the day, in my mind, its the people you meet who make is what it is.

From what the engineers are saying here, its very hands on from the word go but they have to go down the road everyday to a workshop. That said, they dont complain as they still get to eat, go out and complete the work and not heard any complaints about the engineering teachers as most of them have worked at sea in the past (and have some amusing stories too). Most of what I've wrote has come from talking to a Bibby engineer aswell.

Of course, again, this is my view and it may not be the same as everyone else. But hopefully it's given you some food for thought

Its dissapointing to hear that with all the investment that the college is having that simple things are still going down hill with the accomadation, and the showers are the worst 'upgrade' possible.

The start of each year does leave me wondering if the college has ever enrolled a class, written a timetable etc before however that isnt helped by the building works which no doubt will over run, Once things get settled the standard of teaching is very good at STC, and its probably in a better place than fleetwood for things to do when your not working.

Bulman on a course specific point its all a bit werid some of the modules are a bit light on content, health and safety being one, then you have things like electrical principles and engineering science that moves at a pretty hectic pace.
you can take it with a pinch of salt, but i prefer it with a nip of whisky

If its HND Engineering you have to go to STC as Fleetwood only run the FD Engine

STC for sure. You never want to be the first run of classes on a new course. Too many teething problems etc.
I?m heading to STC with Bibby to. But I?m on the Fd Engineering.

Plus don?t forget that that STC is 15 mins from Newcastle and will give you a much better, erm social life...:-P

I heard South Tyneside College (every other department to Marine school) managed to get hold of some money that was meant to go to the marine school, hence new canteen. I also heard that supposedly there will be a court case over it. Tbh they should give the college half to subsidize food, the food is overpriced and ****!

                            Fleetwood way better

Fleetwood! Way better than STC. Fleetwoods intake was 15% higher for sept'12 compared to sept'11 so there obviously doing something right.

That not a great measure in this instance - Fleetwood is probably higher as they have now started doing engine - it was a deck only college till a year or so ago, so new course = more bodies "on the books"
