  • Gangway watch?

Are deck cadets still being given the privileged that is gangway watch?

Looking back on my cadetship I can safely say this was the one worst thing about the entire time... The most mind numbing time wasting job in existence. You learn nothing from it, what you do learn from doing it is learnt in the first ten minutes.

There should have been something in the TRB to limit the number of hours a cadet does it, like say 10 hours over the entire cadetship then thats them finished.

Loads of other people I knew as a cadet had the same problem.

Given that menial jobs came up recently i think i shall offer an answer from someone else
    Quoted from Clanky
    - What it is like to be a deck rating so that when you reach the dizzie heights of chief off and are giving jobs to people you have some understanding of how mind numbingly boring some jobs can be.
    - How to be part of a team doing whatever needs done to maintain the ship rather than someone who thinks the whole ship should revolve around their training record book.

Seems to cover the idea pretty well, The idea of making the TRB so prescribtive so as to say maximum of this then you would also end up with this must be done 6 times to be signed off which would be unworkable. Theres lots of jobs that are pretty routine, so would you say that once youve done it to get a signature you arent allowed to do it again as that is a waste of your time
you can take it with a pinch of salt, but i prefer it with a nip of whisky

Weirdly enough, I kinda enjoyed staging on the barracks front gate, especially when it was later on, and quiet, it gave me plenty of time to be alone with my thoughts. I didn't enjoy doing it a lot, but after a stressful busy month, it was quite nice to be alone on a coold quiet night.

Nooo, I was rarely trusted with one of this, and I would have been loath to use it anyway, due to the children's nursery and apartment blocks outside camp. 5.56 NATO takes an awful lot to stop...

Yes deck cadets are still doing gangway watch.

While I can see why cadets need to be able to do all of the jobs on board so they understand them when they are officers, you also need to learn about what the other crew members do in port so spending large periods of your cadetship doing 6 hour gangway watches, essentially so that the chief officer can free up other crew members for other jobs is not helpful for your training.

However limiting the number of hours you can spend on a certain task can only be a bad thing, there is a lot of jobs on board that are tedious and boring if you start going down that route you will end up with cadets just doing a specified number of times and sitting around doing nothing once there are no new jobs to be done.

Gangway watch is defiantly a form of torture.

You had a gun on the gangway ducki?
