What would you recommend for the type of ship you're working on?
Alistair has already covered the main ones, but if you go on other types: -

    Cruise Ships: -
    A) Passie Areas
    B) Loading areas
    C) Emergency Equipment Stores (that actually goes for all ships, fire lockers and what not)

    Tankers: -
    A) Pump Room (very important and make sure you know all the safety stuff before going in)
    B) Cargo Control Room
    C) Designated Smoking areas (Can't just smoke where you like on a tanker)
    D) Fixed Foam System
    E) Emergency Shut Down Buttons (very important, especially on LNG)
    F) Why not to stay on manifold platforms on LNG Carriers

    General Ships: -
    A) Snap back zones and why not to go into them,
    B) Fire lockers and other emergency stores
    C) Emergency Engine Control (Don't just go "It's an engineers thing" as YOU may have to do it. Engineers have had to sail a ship into port before)
    D) Local Steering Gear controls and how to use them,
    E) Fixed CO2 system
    F) Location of Quick Closing Valves
    G) Emergency Generator and how to start it
    H) Emergency Fire Pump and how to start it
    I) Fire Valves (all of them)

Thats all I can think of off the top of my head, I'm sure I'll come up with more.

Any part of the ship that looks a bit rusty, or in need of a new coat of paint.

    I don't really understand the question - but you will need to locate / work out how to get too (fairly quickly);

Bow, Stern, Fwd Mooring Station, Aft Mooring Station, Engine Control Room, Bosuns Store, Paint Lockers (& Various other stores lockers), Fire Stations, Muster Stations, Mess Room, The Bar (if applicable), The Bridge, your cabin!

And then the rest of the ship over the coming weeks - I still find new passageways even though I've been on the present one over a year.
