  • HND top up

Apologies if this has been posted earlier.

However, does anyone know if any of the colleges offer a HND top-up for cadets who have a HNC?

Correct me if I'm wrong but there's no point going from hnc to hnd, there is very little difference and I think you can get a topup that would take you to a degree?

Depends on what year of Uni you want to enter. If you want to enter final year, HND is needed. If not, HNC is needed.

Either way, it's immaterial if applying for sea-going positions, but relevant for shore based positions.

However, you can work ashore quite easily without either...

I Believe the HND is Required for Chief officer and its a good idea to get it out the way while you are in the mindset for education.. as soon as you start working learning is harder to pick up again. I think its well worth doing if you have the opportunity. also it means taking less time off work to complete the Chief officers course.

HND is only required when doing exemptions for the deck department, not the engineering one...

Yes it does, but we also have other types of cadets viewing this page and we don't want anyone getting the wrong end of the stick now do we?

but still even if HND is required as deck it's unlikely there is a HND top-up course as they are so similar, you might as well just top up to a degree

I thought everyone did the HND as standard? Thats what we did...

I wrote the original post in a rush, hence why it is so vague.

I'm asking about the HND top-up as once I've completed my cadetship (HNC Deck) I would like to continue to do a BSc.

Looking on Warsash's website the entry requirements for their BSc top-up are either; a foundation degree/professional diploma or a HND (with one year’s sea service since obtaining the HND). I realise that the HND is being phased out and gradually being replaced by the HNC, however there is no mention of that in the entry requirements. Hence why I'm asking about a HND top-up.

The obvious thing would be to contact Warsash directly. However, I wondered if anyone on here had first hand experience of progressing from a HNC to a BSc, and whether or not it involved doing a HND top-up in between.

Currently HNC gives you exceptions from seconds ticket, tho due to STCW 2010 requirements coming into play there is talk of this being changed and a HND being needed to sit Seconds and chief tickets, therefore i'm sure company's would prefer candidates that have an HND so when they go for seconds/chief they do not need to take as much time away from work!!
