College - Books/Study equipment

Hi everyone, Just a quick question,

In September i will be attending CoG college to do the deck officers training course, and would like to know if there are any books/study equipment that i would quite likely need? The only reason i ask this is my Father works for DB Schenker, and they have an education trust willing to pay for anything such as laptops to specialist books, and I can apply for them early.

It depends who's sponsoring you to be honest. Certain companies have stopped paying for the navigation pack and etc. Best waiting until you get specific instructions stating what you need to get really.

yeah thats what i was thinking, but are there any bread and butter type books that i could get, anything that applies for anyone? its no fuss its just because the company can fund it all

If you really want to buy some books, go buy one on Efficient Deck Hand.

The library will have all the books you need. But if you want to get any I'd recommend the following:

seamanship notes by Angus Ferguson - Probably the best book for oral revision, keeps everything in a nice layout without waffle
bridge procedures guide
NAVBasics (3 book set)
Ship Stability Mates/Masters by Martin Rhodes
Shipmasters Business Self Examiner by Malcolm Maclachlan
gmdss a user's handbook by denise brehaut
The colregs guide - by dokmar, best colreg book i've read, far better than that sh!te wee blue half sized book a lot of people use

Should get yourself a top of the range Alienware laptop as well if they'll pay for it haha

For COLREGs I recommend getting a copy of the IMO COLREGs that's carried onboard the ship (or from your college library); Photo copy it single sided - cut the pages in half and then bind it together - that way you have the proper rules on 1 side and a nice blank space on the opposite side to scribble your notes and draw little diagrams of lights / situations etc. If you use the official book you'll end up with a nice A5 sized booklet

If you make the thing yourself rather than just reading someone else's, I find you understand it better, but each to their own.

Alternatively: You could get the text for the COLREGs from one of the many many WAFI web sites out there (just make sure its correct) and print your own in the format described above - I just photocopied cause I was on ship at the time and it was easier!
