  • qualification and exemptions

    So I am doing the professional diploma and have been told compared to HNC I get 6 months off sea time before I can go for my C/O coc and exempt from MCA written exam. Which of these would you qualify for with HND with out doing the traditional parts for PD?

      6 months of sea time before chief mates? doesn't sound right - you might wan't to check that as its presently 18 months - and I wouldn't expect the MCA would accept that in 6 months you can gain enough experience - hell 18 is even short! But yes, you are exempt from the MCA written exams.

      To add additional information, you would be exempt from this; http://www.cityofglasgowcollege.ac.u...mates-writtens

      Which basically means you will find yourself in my situation (ex. Foundation Degree);

      Which is I have gained the 18 months sea time, now I need to complete NARAS(M) and PMC and my Orals examination. Which I will be starting in May at Warsash.

        Sea time requirements are laid down in MGN92, though it seems not to have been reissued for PDs, FDs, etc.: MGN 92

        After six months with an OOW ticket you can go for Chief Mate <3000gt.

          I ment its 6 months less so instead of 18 months it is 1 year with a PD probably same with FD down south.

            It's presently 18 months sea time (after gaining your OOW until you are eligible to sit Chief Mates) under Foundation Degree.

            As per what I am having to do and http://www.warsashacademy.co.uk/cour...e-details.aspx

              The old VQ Level 4 let you do Chief Mate's with 12 months sea service and no MCA written exams, but that's not what you are talking about.

                I'm currently doing the professional diploma route: it's 18 months sea time with exemption for mates written (IF you pass the PDA which is done during the second sea phase).

                  Do you sit the OOW written exams? I heard that everybody does these now.

                    No written exam for OOW either however that is only if you have pass the PDA unit. If you don't do the projects while at sea or if you fail it then you get a HND Nautical Science and you WILL have to sit OOW written exams and lose the Mates written exemption too.

                    The PD route have 3 Graded Unit exams (1 in Phase 1 and 2 in Phase 3) which is the college equivalent to the MCA written exams.

                      No we don't have to do the OOW writtens, unless something's changed and no-one has told us (wouldn't surprise me). Quite why doing a professional development course gives you exemptions for OOW/Mates writtens I'm not quite sure but removing this and making us do writtens would remove any motivation for doing the PDA side of things. Its the main benefit you get out of it IMO.

                        Ugh. That's weird. Used to be that the HND exempted you from the OOW writtens. HND had four large 'integrated' exams, AIUI the first two were HNC level, the second pair HND.
