Any photographers?

The super zoom cameras seem to have come a long way and take pretty good telephoto images. The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ45 is pretty tempting with its 24x optical zoom for ?220. I had the Canon S1 IS 9 years ago which was 10x and it did have some purple fringing on maximum zoom due to the lens setup 5.58 - 58mm. I wonder how the Panasonic compares...

Having looked into superzooms for a bit, the Fujufilm Finepix HS10 looks even better with a 30x optical zoom and for the same price

@CD 50-500mm, thats a huge range (plane spotter territory). Did you go for the Sigma?

@CD well with the 1.6 magnification factor of the 350D (not a full frame sensor), the 300mm lens is effectively a 460mm lens

I don't think I would want to be traveling with a 150-500! Bit of a big lens and would end up having to go in the check in luggage :/

I will be taking all my gear I think, it all fits in my Lowepro bag as hand luggage

I won't be taking my SLR on my next ship, it took too much of my hand luggage. I'm very keen on the Fujifilm super zoom compact camera though, must hide credit card.

Word of warning- I got told off on my first cruise ship for taking my camera about with me "You're here to work, not take pictures" It's only a Fuji S6500 but is bulky enough to be in the way, I was using it to take pics of tender ops etc, but still... I got me a small pocket size pointy clicky asap! As a cadet I took a lot of pics, a years worth are still waiting to be edited before I get them up onto flickr! Nowadays I don't get much time for taking pics - got me a bollocking on the bridge afew weeks ago though for taking a couple of snaps as we went through the Panama Canal - it was deserved really, the pilot had the con and everything, but I should have been concentrating on what he was doing as we went round a turn. Won't make that mistake again!!! It's a shame I see so many things I want to take pics of, but the job has to come first!

I had a small pocket camera on me while I was working, mostly to support the TRB/workbook, but I took a few sneaky tourist shots with it too. I took the bulk of my tourist photos with the SLR during smoko breaks as I'm not a smoker, in my lunchbreak, or outside my 8-6 working hours. I wouldn't take any photos while watch keeping. As a general point, best not to use the flash in the switchboard room as it triggers the arc sensors.

Advantages of schlepping around in a boiler suit all day with a pointy clicky camera that fits comfortably into one of my many pockets...

I've also been given a minor telling off for taking "scenic pictures" whilst in drydock and not actually supervising the "furniture" who should have been replacing a radar.....
