  • P&O Ferries - What are they like?

    Hey,

    Just found out that I am a P&O Ferries cadet, does anyone have any expereince of what they're like?

    Two friends are with them. You may not see anywhere exotic, but you'll learn a hell of a lot about ship handling and the Rules.

      Sam, first of all, congratulations!

      All companies have positives and negatives, as tlloyd says with P&O ferries you won't be going to the Carribean, but you will be doing lots of arrivals and departures and depending on which route you are on (I think they will move you around a bit) you will be dealing with traffic a lot.

      I have done some agency work for P&O in the past and they are well run ships with a good solid safety and quality management system, starting your career in that environmjent will set you in good stead no matter where you end up.

      All cadets and prospective cadets should be aware that no matter which company you train with the certificate of competency which you (hopefully) walk away with at the end of your cadetship is your passport to work on any ship in the world, so for cadets who are employed through training agencies like CMT or SSTG, don't worry too much about which company you are training with, there is plenty of time to change at the end.

          Well done Sam, I think you'll enjoy working for P&O!

          I thought that the training there was very good and gained a lot of experience working for them. If i remember rightly there were great opportunities to get qualifications like foundation degrees but im not certain.

          tlloyd and clanky are right though the locations aren't the most glamorous, but its a good job congrats!!

            Hi sam are you a january starter???? ...... Does anyone know the voyage lenght tours followed by how much leave you get during sea phase?
            are your north sea p and o? or channel?
            did they let you choose your college?

              Sorry, I forgot to answer your Q's in my PM mikeodude. The tour length i am told is 6 weeks for cadets, with 2 weeks leave. The ships companies will be on 2 on 2 off but you stay on longer to get your training in.
