  • Honourable Company of Master Mariners

Just been reading the article on this (thanks CharlieDelta) and it seems like a great organisation, especially the mentoring that they offer for cadets all the way up until they achieve their masters ticket. Is anyone here a junior/associate member and has been assigned a mentor? How do you find it? Just curious really

No idea, but just to tack on, the Engineers also have their own institute. We have The Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST). I highly recommend joining, it's free as a student so take full advantage of it whilst you can.
I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by.....

Absolutely, Nautical Institute, honourable company of master mariners, IMarEST, all looks good on a cv when you are applying for jobs later on, try to avoid adding lots of letters after your name on every e-mail though - makes you look like a pompous prat.

Positive experiences here with HCMM. The induction curry lunch along with free wine on HQS Wellington went down very well with mother dearest.

I'm also an associate member of the Nautical Institute. Worth it for the monthly copy of Seaways and the odd interesting event here and there.

I really must join the IMarEST....do you still need a sponsor or anything for membership? I dont know anyone round where I live that even does my job yet alone a member of the Institute.......*adds another job to the ever growing list of **** to do*

Yes I work for the big blue canoe company.
No I do not report things from here to them as they are quite able to come and read this stuff for themselves.

I'd imagine being a member of Nautilus, HCMM/IMarEST and the Nautical Institute must all end up getting a tad expensive? Or does membership of one organisation kind of supersede membership of another?

IMarEST is for the engineers and HCMM / NI are for the deckies, it's not cheap, but depending on where you want to go with your career it can more than pay for itself eventually.

I'm an associate member of the NI, suppose I should update them and become a member properly now I'm qualified. CD how does one go about becoming a HCMM member?
