  • Operations Workbook

Just trying to tidy up my workbook and printing everything from my last trip out.
In the guidance it mentions that it should be well referenced. Does anyone know what is meant by that.

Our training officer has said that each report should be referenced to a task in the TRB, so basicly writing the task number that the number relates to at the top.

However for some of my reports there isn't a task that relates to the reports that I have written( Things like heli rescue drills and rescue from aloft on a tall ship)

Also are we expected to reference it in the academic sense as in the sorces for things I have written SOLAS etc?

Sorry this is a bit vague, but i hope it makes sense.

If your foundation degree - then yes you should refererence various publications if appropriate ie; solas, coswp, company SMS, etc.

I reference any publications I've read to help me write the report in a bibliography. It's usually pretty short and just displays the reading I've done (we have a cadet library onboard) such as Seamanship Techniques, CoSWoP, SOLAS, etc etc...

If what you're writing about is covered in SOLAS or any of the other conventions include the chapter number. (i.e. "This requirement is set out in SOLAS (III/19.3)...")

There's always something relevant in the TRB to link your report to, even if it's just one of the higher level all-encompassing "being safe" tasks.

any idea on what should the operations workbook be consisting of and is it separate from you work based learning tasks set by warsash?

Yes it is separate. WBL is assessed by the college and what it actually consists of depends on what the college wants, Warsash sets specific essays, whereas Fleetwood lets you set your own projects.

The Nav and Ops workbook is a requirement of the MCA and basically is your way of providing evidence that you have done all the things that have been signed off in the TRB. Mine ended up as two lever arch files full of Ops, with sections for each subject on each ship. All the work in these was typed up, with some referencing but not a great deal to be honest, but with lots of photos included of me doing drills, greasing, tendering, etc. I also handed in one and a half hand written A4 notebooks of Nav workbook, this included met observations and analysis of weather charts (glued in as extra pages) sailings calculations, tides, compass errors and celestial calculations, as well as narrative entries for most days I was on watch, talking about what happened, why and what I did on watch. (Including things like traffic situations, keeping the log book, plotting on the charts etc, again- photocopies and photgraphs are your friend here).

In the back of your TRB there is a section laying out all the requirements for demonstrating competency. Read it!!

I don't know what you're heard about me. But it's not true. Not entirely anyway.
