  • HND add on???

I'm currently studying HNC Marine Engineering @ Glasgow, and I would like to get my HND when my training if finished. Does anyone know if any colleges offer HNC officers to gain their HND??
    cheers

From what I've been hearing the funding for cadetships is going to be limited to your first ticket only.

I think these SMarT cuts need some proper clarification. I'm sure companies will still cover the cost of higher tickets as long as you stay for a certain amount of time, but perhaps not?

it wont come under the cadet agreement so it is basically doing another course, ideally your employer after the cadetship will have a training program that allows you to progress to higher tickets and provides both the time and money to do it, it may not be the HND but it will allow you to progress from 3rd to 2nd. If you just wish to top up to the HND (im not sure what gains you would make towards the next ticket doing it) then its unlikely to be funded but the colleges should be able to identify what extra credits that you need.

its where getting the NOE for an oral and getting an academic qualification becomes a bit murky,
you can take it with a pinch of salt, but i prefer it with a nip of whisky

I *think* the engineering HND comes with 2nd engineer exemptions = shorter 2nd course.

HND gives you exemptions from chiefs & 2nds where as HNC only gives exemptions from 2nds. I'm not concerned with regards to funding ect I was just wandering if anyone had heard of colleges having a course available to HNC students. Someone told me there was one available and it was an additional 4 months on completion of HNC!? I feel an HND would be beneficial for future job prospects further down the line.

Yeah the HND gives you your exemptions right through the rest of your career. The only exams you then have to sit for your 2nds and chiefs is Engineering Knowledge and some kind of Legislation. But you have to get a certain % on your HND to gain those exemptions.

The HND is not a bolt on, it's another course that *should* normally take one academic year to do.

I thought most companies were sending you off to do the HND, we did...

Most colleges now seem to offer the HNC apart from Warsash.

As Engineer's, you normally do the HNC in Phase 1 and the HND in Phase 3.

Like I said, it's not another bolt on or top up bit to get it, it's another course entirely. You need the HNC to do the HND, however in this industry no-body really cares about HNC/HND, it's mostly experience and ticket based, even the shore side of things.

I am pretty sure that as STC for engineering our first phase was the National Certificate then now in phase three we do the HNC and if that is passed well then go onto the HND later in the year.
