  • CHILTERN MARITIME CADETS what sort of ships can you go on?

a friend of mine has recently joined chiltern maritime, he would like to know what kind of ships you can be sent to (if anyone has any expierience with chiltern) and how long are you usually at home before being sent to sea? Thanks

The wait tends to be a few weeks, but you are likely to get only a few days notice about your next ship, especially if its something you're joining in the UK, for placements you have to fly out to you will get more notice. I was put put on a buoy tender twice (THV Patricia, a 4 week trip and a 6 week trip), cruise ships (QM2 3 months, Wind Surf 4.5 months and Balmoral 6 weeks), a ro-ro ferry (6 weeks) and a small general cargo ship (4 days). As your mate is a boy then he'll be likely to get a bit more time on something cargo, apparently a lot of cargo companies won't take girls... (Hrumph). My coursemate got put on a banana boat, though he said it wasn't a good trip.

PS. Tell your friend to stop being lazy and get his ass on here to ask his own questions!!

You don't say which type of cadet your friend is. However for ETOs....

For my 1st sea phase, I and the other 2 ETO cadets with TH administered by Chiltern went on HAL cruise ships, this was also the case for the ETO cadet with MEF also administered by Chiltern.

We found out a few weeks before we flew out to meet the 4 ships. This year, HAL have recruited their own ETO cadets through Viking so I think its unlikely that Chiltern will be sending cadets to HAL again.

I was told that a lot of companies wouldn't take on female cadets, I wasn't offered an explanation of why, but I think these were all companies that don't take on thier own cadets. I had hoped that my cadetship would have provided me with a more varied selection of ships, but I got mostly cruise ships.
