  • News @ Sea

Many shipping companies do not offer access to the internet and the only means of personal communication is via a company email client.

On my first trip I was very frustrated with the 'news paper' which was emailed to the ship every other day.

During shore leave, I'd be in the Seaman's Mission trying to find e-news papers which I could subscribe to. This proved extremely frustrating - most news services such as BBC will only email you the headline of the article as a link to their website, no good if you only have the email client (such as WinAdmi for those of you unfortunate enough to have had the pleasure!)

Anyone know of any news papers that you can subscribe to that will send you the full article instead of just the headlines?

If not, anyone interested in helping out setting up a news service for those at sea?
Basically just involve copying and pasting news articles and forwarding them to a distribution list, I know a load of people who'd be up for subscribing...
Remember, you can be sea sick and sick of the sea. Avoid both at all costs...

Try asking your company about Newslink.

If that fails, then send me your email addresses, what sort of News you want and I'll email them to you on a daily/weekly basis or whatever.
I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by.....

We get Ocean Link (might be Newslink now I think about it but arent any where near my desk to check )and it's sent every day, it's basically a condensed version of the Torygraph.

For Win-Admi users you should be aware that subscription services are expressly forbbiden in the useage section of the appropriate procedure. And (just about) all that company's ships have an internet now. PLUS the news sheet should have been delivered daily, if not talk to your local friendly chiefy or other entertainments officer becasue we are paying for it to be delivered daily

Yes I work for the big blue canoe company.
No I do not report things from here to them as they are quite able to come and read this stuff for themselves.

Subscribe to the news over EGC on your GMDSS Sat-C system. You get a random summary of stories + some sports once a day.

You can also get BBC world news on your MF/HF radio the officers should know the frequency, or have it written down somewhere.

          Independent

Hi, the Independent does a free app for some phones which will download about 150 articles from front page news to editorial comment as well as sport, media, education and the lifestyle bollocks too.
I used it out in Greece and just updated whenever I got a wifi connection. Cost me nowt.

I'd never read the Independent before this but it seems to do what it says on the tin and attempt to report the news without a political bias or hidden agenda unlike Torygraph, Daily (Hate) Mail, Times, BBC etc.

I've heard Al Jazeera does a good line in fairly unbiased reportage and certainly gives a voice to unheard voices. VERY interesting comparing their line on a topic with that of....hmmm, FOX? ha ha ha.
The major difference between a thing that might go wrong and a thing that cannot possibly go wrong is that when a thing that cannot possibly go wrong goes wrong it usually turns out to be impossible to get at or repair.

You don't need one to do your job, and most crews would have off with them if they were given to them at any rate.
