So I got my joining instructions. Has a brief outline of the course including all short courses. Only issue is that most of them have are abbreviations that I'm not sure what they stand for. Any want to help me decode them? (Have included ones I think I know beside them please correct me if I am wrong)

    EDH (Efficient deck hand?)
    CPSCRB
GMDSS (Global Marine Distress Signals System - Siganls and voice procedure?)

    Thanks

Certificate of proficentcy in survival craft and rescue boats is the last one

GMDSS is normally the radio liecence that is needed and is a bunch of fun
you can take it with a pinch of salt, but i prefer it with a nip of whisky

I would go with Sarcasm. I can't see the fun in talking into a radio.

CPSCRB is rather good fun though. Driving lifeboats around and what not...
I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by.....

GMDSS = Global Maritime Distress & Safety System - not Signal

Sunday morning 8am was when my exams for the GOC started whats not fun about that?

i was tempted to tell you that the CPSCRB was the Child Protection Services Criminal Record Check but i felt that might be a bit unfair

Signals exam is done separately as part of a college unit rather than a short course in itself.

The GMDSS course is by all accounts a bit tortuous.

I wouldn't say that - it's not really hard, after all you should have used everything on the ship - it just doesn't allow for errors. It's got to be the most boring short course though! With Advanced Fire Fighting and NARAS(o) being the most fun in my opinion

I'm quite sad I love signals, voice procedure and radios. I willing spent 2 weeks of my summer a few years ago on a signals course. Am actually wishing I didn't have to wait until phase 5 for it.

Feel free to ridicule my nerdy ways :P

                    Tortuous as in tortuously boring!

It'll be interesting starting NARAS this phase, though it seems a bit long for a short course - looks like it runs all through phase three?

Yer, Warsash teach the theory as part of the cadetship - you also do the ECDIS and Radar plotting bit, leaving only the 5 day simulator part to the end - on foundation degree its done phase 5... not sure when you do the simulator short course on HND though.

So what is efficient deck hand.
Is that the course a new rating would take?

EDH is the basic deck skills ropes knots etc
