  • Personal kit to take to sea?

I know theres a sea packing list on the wiki page but I just want peoples personal opinions, what personal gear (clothes) do you all take to sea with you? I was thinking of buying a windbeaker jacket for bad weather when on shore leave etc.

    depends, where are you going?
    "My Job"

It's not my place to run the boat
the fog horn I can't blow.

It's not my place to say just where
    the boat's allowed to go

It's not my right to dock the boat
    or even clang the bell

    But let the damn thing
start to sink AND SEE WHO CATCHES HELL!

It does depend where you are going, and also how long you expect to spend alongside. Also it depends on which company you work for, as some don't like you wearing personal gear onboard at all and others it is the other way round.

Take a coat for sure, theres nothing worse than getting off a plane to find its raining and if you do get the chance of shore leave you dont really want to miss out becasue of some rain.
Make sure you bring all the right cables and stuff for laptops and what ever else, but also see how many things will charge using the same cables my kindle, phone, ipod all charge off the cable pluged into the lappy so it saves having to bring the little chargers for all of them. If your bringing more than 20kg (excluding uniform) your bringing too much stuff. I always travel with some tea, it means im sure to get a decent cup now and again,

as for clothes some trackies and maybe one smart pair of jeans, a large handful of t shirts, one hoody, one jumper, one coat and you cna bring as much underware as you really feel like which really depends on how much of a dirty skank you are, flip flops are handy and then the rest of the shoes kinda depends on the uniform options
I must say i brought some books on my first ship and finished them pretty quick so the Kindle is def a good thing to pass an hour in the cabin, also get a dvd ripping program so you can tke a digital copy of all those DVD's you own.
you can take it with a pinch of salt, but i prefer it with a nip of whisky

WinX DVD Ripper Platinum is good, you have to pay for it but it rips in 20-40 minutes rather than 2+ hours so well worth it in my opinion.

For a free DVD ripper, I use handbreak. It can rip into 700MB files, quite handy as it means not needing a few Drives to store the movies on.

I used Handbrake but it was taking far too long for me.

Take at least one pair of shorts/joggers/trackers with you, something for lazying about in, and bring at least 3 shirts (dependant on how long you go away for), i brought 5 shirts, 2 jeans, 2 shorts, and 2 workwear trousers when i went on a 4 month trip, and a coat of course. Worked out fine for me, just depends on how willing you are to wash and iron your clothes i guess
Life at sea is a life for me
