  • Appearance on board?

I am just wondering what the general consensus is on board cargo ships regarding facial hair? I hate being totally clean shaven and keep my beard to a very short length (stubble) all over, it never gets too long or messy. Would this be acceptable in general?

as long as you dont look scruff you should be fine, if you meet your compnay rep at college looking like that is generally a good indication, i'd stick a razor in anyway means that you can if you have to.
you can take it with a pinch of salt, but i prefer it with a nip of whisky

Obviously cruise companies will have stricter regulations on what appearances should be like, but for cargo just general good grooming as you'd maintain ashore is ok

Thanks for the information guys, thats good to know. This sounds weird but I find if I am totally clean shaven I feel that I don't look like myself! haha

Ideally, you should remain completely clean shaven whilst on ship and not grow a beard. Reasoning behind it is because if you have a beard then you won't be able to get a seal with a BA Mask, although this is generally ignored.

Plus during the crossing the line when all yiour hair is shaved off, you'll look stupid with a beard!!

No I do not report things from here to them as they are quite able to come and read this stuff for themselves.

I'd just like to mention its not beard length at all, its like very short stubble. Didn't have a problem with the BA in the fire-fighter training so hopefully it will be fine

General rules for cruise ships Ive worked on if you join with a beard/stubble then you can continue with it, you can't grow one whilst on board. Cargo ships I've found generally don't care, aslong as you dont smell no one really minds that much.

I however hate seeing a cadet with bum fluff who insists on growing a patchy light blonde peach fuzz beard.
                  Cheers and ta

Hmmm, only grow a beard if you have fast-growing, thick facial hair. The fuzz look does nobody any favours!

And makes you look like you belong on the bridge with a pipe and a sextant.
