International sim Card's

Just looking for advice on Calling abroad really due too join ship soon , and after looking at what my current provider orange charges for international calls i started looking at the international ones !!

So far i have looked at what orange can offer me , at ?5 pound per month they offer a 30% discount on international calls which is still mind boggingly expensive

So i looked into a few companies
Sea Roam
Go sim
044

So far GO sim with the international + seems to be the best deal

Countries visting are the USA , Columbia , Chile , Ecuador , Peru , Panama

Or is it cheaper to buy a local sim ?

unless your desperate to get in contact with home then try avoiding these, people in my phase got these and said they are massive rip off's! your ship would have a satelitte phone which are a lot better to use sometimes

just buy sim cards when you get into port and buy top up cards. There is always someone there selling them when you get in and usually for the whole duration of your stay. A sim is normally 5 dollars then a 20 minute call on a top up card is 3 dollars.

Sat Phones are normally about a $1 a minute, so it works out cheaper than a UK international call!

no but most ships have one you can buy phone cards for.

You muppet! Most deep sea ships will let you use the Sat Phone, all you do is fill your name in and how long you were on for and when the bill comes at the end of each month then they will send the deduction off to CMT to have it deducted off your monthly pay.

You didn't think we actually take our own sat phones to sea with us did you?

Though keep in mind the deduction's when you come back from using your sat phone, i'm still being deducted in pay from using it/the slop chest, from a trip june-sept last year !

Guinessman no I guessed people were talking about company phones. I was juxt curious to see if owning ones own was practical.
