That list seem very very long, how on earth do you carry so much kit around?

        Rowdy,
As a seaman, when flying to join/leave a ship you're given a 40kg baggage allowance.
Remember that you're actually going away somewhere to live and work for a few months, ergo you'll need a lot more gear than heading off on holiday.
Whilst adequate amounts/variety of clothing is of course a no brainer, it's all the other little things which make life away that bit more bearable/comfortable.

          Hi Malim,

I guess it's just very different from the amount of luggage we are allowed to take on RN ships, it's good to know I can take a few creature comforts with me though

            Rowdy,
I make full use of my allowance and take things like books/Ipod Speakers/World Service Radio/Hammock etc with me.
No more worries as to whether it'll all fit in your single 'black bag'!

Indeed, they can be norty like that...oh and remember each bag must be less than 23kg so it's a 2 bag job...though my bag hasnt been over 20kg for YEARS oh the joys of back to back

Yes I work for the big blue canoe company.
No I do not report things from here to them as they are quite able to come and read this stuff for themselves.

Budget airlines generally don't offer discounted Seaman's tickets, it's only the larger/long distance carriers. However your employer should take that into account when planning your travel. I'm if flying with a budget type airline I always check the baggage limits before I even go near the airport, and if there are restrictions I'm straight on the phone to the travel dept to get it sorted out. For example my current employer generally uses FlyBe for internal UK flights, however they always book me a Business Premium ticket as this grants me the higher luggage allowance (and access to the lounge!),
It's worth remembering that shipping company travel departments are generally utterly useless, so always check beforehand!

Indeed, mine apparently though 'Manchester' was in Scotland... it was promptly sorted after an email was sent.

                        Hi,

I am currently packing for going away on my first trip and I was wondering what in terms of notes from college willl I need to take with me if any. I was thinking Celestial, Nav maths etc and was just going to leave my cargo and stability notes as i feel most crew members will have a decent knowledge of those subjects, unlike celestial. Can anyone advice as to what they have done in past experiences.

                        thanks
