  • North Star Shipping - First Trip

    Hi Guys,

I'm just finishing my first phase of HND Deck at GCNS and looking forward to my first trip to sea!

Does any have any knowledge on North Star? Either through their own experience or someone else?

I'm just looking for some information on :

    - What type of work to expect on my first trip (not a big issue as I'll work hard no mater what I'm doing)
    - What sort of stuff should I take with me? (Haven't had any communication with the training officer)
    - Will the boats have WIFI or will it be a case of a satellite phone?
    - How many 28 day trips will I expect? (Back at College Oct 24th)
    - Any do's and dont's? (should just be common sense but Incase anyone has had any bad experiences)

Any information will be greatly appreciated

Personally the college should be giving you a run down of what to expect, but as they aren't you should contact your training officer, or North Star.
I'm assuming that you're with SSTG as you're North Star, in which case being at GCNS your training officer should be Rachel, if it is, and you don't have her e-mail, if you send me a PM I'll send it to you. Personally I find that she always gets back to me within a day of being e-mailed.
Also, if you have a contact with North Star, you should probably try to get hold of them, though as I understand it, they don't insist on a second interview after the initial SSTG one, so you may not have met anyone/ be able to contact anyone within the company.

I've heard that all the rooms on the North Star ships have sky in them, so wi-fi is a possibility, but you'll really need to contact your training officer. In my experience the SSTG are very helpful, and will answer any questions you have promptly, but from speaking to the other limited SSTG cadets in my phase, it seems to be a case that you have to contact them if you have any issues/queries.

      Thanks for your reply!

I had a meeting with Rachel today actually, just to go over our Training Record Books. SSTG have been really good so far with their communication.
My Training Officer from North Star was at the college to see us in October but unfortunatley the course leader from the Deck side forgot to tell the Deck Cadets, so she had a meeting with the Engineers. I hadn't been able to contact my Training Officer at North Star until today. I believe she has been ill lately.
I manage to get in touch with her over the phone in the early afternoon and she said I was too early phoning for sea phase details (3 weeks before my sea phase starts) and to phone back on the week I've to go away to find out what's happening.

I didn't feel like I could have asked her any of the above questions today. That sounds good about the sky tv, WIFI would be a bonus to keep in touch with people.

Yeah, I think some companies are quite withholding on information. I'm currently in self catered with a few later phase cadets, and they both had problems organising their sea phase with Clyde, one of them even phoned up to find out when they were meant to be going away, only to be told that they thought he was already at sea.

With that said, North Star take on a lot of cadets from what I gather, or they used to, so even though they've got lots of boats it could still be very difficult to organise.

Most wont be able to tell you just yet as Shipping Schedules are not set in stone and neither are rotations. You may be set to board the M/V Me-hearty on the 15th February, but that might change and you could end up on the M/T Polly-wants-a-cracker on the 10th February instead. Nothing in this industry, especially if it relates to the oil industry, is set in stone.

Basically, wait and see. They will give you two or three days notice before you leave.
I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by.....

Aye one of my mates is on his 4th phase as an Engineer Cadet just now. Clyde marine phoned saying he was going on a gas tanker to get more port experience (having already done 5 months on one) He questioned them on this to find that they thought he was a Decky!

Thanks for the info though guys!

I had the same problem trying to get in contact with them. I managed to get through to Julia Park on her direct line eventually. If you need the number then PM me.

Julia has been off quite a bit recently. Just keep ringing and you'll get an answer soon enough.

She made me feel like I was bugging her when I finally got through to her. She snapped at another cadet who rang, saying that she had told Rachel to tell us not to phone her until we finish college.

A wee bit of communication from the company would have been nice, even at the start of the course. Just to let us know they care
