  • Sunglasses!

    Right, weird question!

I've got a new glasses prescription, and would like to get some new sunglasses before I go off to sea.

For the cruisey types, particularly Carnival-ers, are there any preferred styles or any styles to stay away from as far as uniform is concerned?

    :101:

(For some reason we don't have a sunglasses smiley so I thought that'd do...)

For the Deck Dept 'Oakleys' have always been the sunglasses of choice!

Watch out if you get glasses with transitions lenses or anything like that as you can't (shouldn't) wear them at night.

Nah, always thought they were a bit naff to be honest (reactions, that is).

Reactions are perfectly fine. I use them well enough, and so did a few guys in our Navigation department.

              Weren't Reactions semi-blamed for a P&O Ferries collision?

                Re: Sunglasses!

I dont see how, it's not like they are tinted lenses, they are actually clear at night (well mine are anyways, there is no colour difference). A dirty window would be worse than reaction lenses!

Besides, they blame Radar's, Radio's, etc for collisions as well. At the end of the day, I'd always blame the watchkeeper.

                  Read: http://www.maib.gov.uk/cms_resources.cf ... /Ouzo_.pdf

All of it, but especially from bottom of page 22. IIRC there's an annexe about the lenses but you'll have to find that for yourselves.

                    Re: Sunglasses!

This is from 2006! Photochromatic lenses have improved a great deal since then as I've been using them since they first came out. It even mentions in the report about the quality of the lenses commercially available being better than what was sent over by the MAIB.

The report also commented on his eyesight going from light to dark and the amount of time it would take for his eyes to adapt. The man was 60! It would take a while for his eyes to fully adapt!

I have used them for years too and I don't notice a difference but if you lay an older pair on top of a white sheet you can see that the lenses do start too stay a bit darker. Just make sure your spares are plain boring lenses and that you wear them at night.

Also watch out if you have shades that are polarised as some windows are also polarised and then you have problems!

                        Re: Sunglasses!

I have found (as someone else said) most of us deckies tend to have Oakleys or Raybans...

I recommend Polarised lenses though - otherwise the sun reflecting off the water will begin to annoy you after a few days!

As alistairuk said, Rayban P (Polarised Range). You can get oakleys and raybans on prescription, right?

I would never choose anything else... Oakley polarised for me every time.
