  • CAD Software used during the course?

Any of you current cadets ever used CAD software design for anything in the three years spent at uni?

If you go to GCNS then nope!
You are taught how to do it by hand so that you will understand technical drawings yourself, but thats about it.

At Warsash we have been told that very little/no cad is used... we all learn how to draw to BS8888 anyway so we can understand technical drawings and create them...

I don't suppose deckies get to learn this do they?

during the course are there any optional topics you can do? like in a regular college?
For example even though i'd be a deck cadet i'd still like to know some basics of the engine and propulsion.

not normally... you guys tend to be kept busy with learning which way to point the ship rather than being able to create and alter parts and the like...

well i guess learning which way to point the ship is more relevant. =]

it's just i have CAD experience and find it quite interesting.

If you want to learn a little bit about engines, when your on your ship, ask your Chief Engineer very nicely if he minds if you go down the engine room when your off duty and help the duty officer.

Poor effort; Solidworks is pretty cool if a bit of a memory hog(I was a CADmonkey before I ran away to sea) and academic licences are not very expensive. I have had a little play with Pro-E and liked that too.

I've always wanted to try Solidworks, i saw some demos and it looked awesome.

I have SW on my laptop and used it at 6th form, now at Warsash we have to draw with our hands **shock horror**!
