  • question regarding spouse/ partner once your qualified

i think its my understanding once you qualify as an officer, with cruise ships at least, you can take your partner onboard for a discount rate?

could anyone clarify these questions for me thanks

firstly, is the discount rate generous?

and is there a limit to what you can have in terms of weeks/ months etc?

Dunno about cruises (but some one will )

However boxes let your wife / partner travel with you for 1 tour / year as a "junior" officer, the definition of partner needs to be checked for instance:- for many many years P&O Containers ONLY accepted being married, but Maersk accept "living together" so long as you can prove it AND it's been for "awhile"<-- cannt remember the time scale.

Anchor Handlers dont tend to let wives onboard due to space requirements.

The some boats have some restrictions on them, like which run they are on, currently wives arent allowed on vessels running through Gulf of Aden due to security concerns, though this may vary from compny to company, also wives can be sent home if the SOLAS numbers are getting high with cadets, traveling technicians etc being on board.

I would imagine tankers will run very similar policies, as there is very little original thinking in the maritime industry

Yes I work for the big blue canoe company.
No I do not report things from here to them as they are quite able to come and read this stuff for themselves.

I'm a cruise ship officer so I thought i'd chip in here.

On cruise ships you can take your partner/spouse along during a contract to live in your cabin and eat in the officer's mess at a heavily discounted rate. Some cruise lines even let them on for free but others usually charge a norminal fee per day for example carnival uk charge something like 5 pounds a day. Usually there are restirctions on the amount of time they are allowed on board for as well that could be anywhere between a month and a couple of months a year depending on the cruise line.

But with most cruise lines this is a perk and as such you might only be entitled to it after a year of so of working for a company. The same goes for concession cruises where you can get family/ friends discounts to cruise as passengers and stay in passenger cabins.

I didn't think Maersk would let the misses on the box boats.................... If only I had a misses now .

I'll need to remember that in a bar " If you marry me you can travel the world "
