  • Learning foreign languages

Has anyone actually managed to learn a language from a foreign colleague at sea? I've always wanted to learn one, but I don't have the motivation to do it at home.

I thought it might be a nice touch to learn a little Filipino or Hindi before joining, but I doubt I'll have enough time though.

the last few weeks i have been slowly learning spanish. Not to get on with the crew. It is a pretty good language. Spanish is very similar to Italian. Plus all of South America speak it bar Brazil and a lot of southern states in America have a large spanish speaking population. Filipino is not particularly difficult n they use a few spanish words too!

Yeah, I wouldn't waste your time learning a language whose food, people, and (some aspects of) culture (in it's broadest sense) don't interest you.

You learn a lot faster when there's chance of a shag (or at least a nice dinner) to reward your efforts...

You might also see it as a break from the routine at work, and that's another reason why you might feel disinclined to indulge in learning Croatian, Urdu, or Tagalog: none of which are particularly mellifluous.

P.S.: you might want to start with mastering English before butchering any other languages: "forgien"?!

I can already speak most other languages, just by doing the English thing and speaking English but in their accent, they usually understand you :P

                  Re: Learning forgien languages

im semi fluent in norwegian and hoping to become fairly fluent in the language in a few months time, i do about two hours of it a day.

just wondering though, will this actually help me on my application form for a deck officer?
well i know it will help, im just not sure how it will

Bearing in mind that the International Working Language of the Sea is........English, then I cant see the point tbh, most times the International Officers want to speakee the Engrish to get some practice in, having sailed with various sorts, the written word is most in need of sorting, I have seen some truely bad reports of accidents and near misses due to the safety officer not having English as a first languae, it is nice to have some Tagalok but depends on your crew some will not be impressed, others will not.
