  • GMS through SSTG?

    Hi everyone!

I attended an interview with SSTG yesterday and was offered a couple of jobs as an engineering officer cadet (FD course).

The options were limited at this time of year but a company called GMS (Global Marine Systems) seemed my best bet.

Does anyone know anything about this company or its cadets?

    Thanks x

That's the cable ship outfit that operate, or used to, out of Portland? Their depot there has looked pretty quiet the last few times I've seen it. I actually thought it was closed and they had pulled out, but I've seen their ships there again so it can't be.

My only experience of a Global Marine cadet was when one came up our gangway (RFA) utterly pissed and insisted he was on his own ship and could someone please help him to his cabin.

      Just an update....

Typed Global Marine Systems into Facebook and came across a group of employees past and present.
Lots of pics and I left a message, so hopefully will get some replies soon!

One of the pics did have a group of officers at the bar with one of them with his *ahem* out
Thought I would censor that bit because I'm not sure if you can say willy on a forum....
      .....oh crap.....

As for the RFA experience above, sounds good already

A quiet depot is a good thing.... means the ships are out working. That is, unless, they were not alongside empty too!

I was there again recently and Wave Sentinel was present. She popped out for a week or so, but was otherwise very much a fixture. Haven't seen Sovereign in a while though.

I put down GMS as a preference with SSTG, hopefully hear from them soon as they sound like a crackin' company

I posted something about them a while back, we had a class trip on the CS Sovereign, was a good ship and a friendly crew.

Ah CS Sovereign has been out and about for a fair few months now. I'm not sure when she last seen Portland. At present I believe she is up in Sunderland.

Wave Sentinel on the other hand has been busy - I was out on her for 8 weeks. Although sometimes she does get to soak up the sights of Portland for a bit.

CS Sovereign - Yeah the visit was while she was down the road in Sunderland.

Is Pacific Guardian still station ship in Suva? She seemed to be THE ship to get on - what a life those blokes had!

I believe the PacG is stationed in Curacao (spelt wrong) - Having been moved from Bermuda.

Of course, if your a standby vessel with no work then your life revolves around PM's and the local territory.

In Suva their lives revolved around the Golf Course and their families (who lived ashore).
I seem to remember they managed to get the company to pay for the golf balls - they were listed as ships stores!
If memory serves she went for a jolly to Sydney every couple of months and would sit alongside in Darling Harbour doing sweet FA for a week and then go back to Fiji.
                          Aye it was tough!
