  • Applying for Cadetships

When applying for Cadet places is it common for people to apply to many companies and training providers in one go and see what happens?
Or would this be considered rude? What if you are offered more than one position?

I would like to start college in Jan and currently have applied with one training provider but would like to have my options open.

Apply to as many as you like!! It's like applying for any other job really, shop around, go for lots of interviews ask lots of questions, then you can pick the one who offers the best deal, training, and opportunities.

      Re: Applying for Cadetships

I applied to Clyde Marine, SSTG, and Carnival directly. Didn't hear anything back from Carnival, though Clyde Marine sent me a letter a week later saying they would organise me an interview. They never did, but I got an interview with SSTG and was successful with them. As soon as I found out I received sponsorship from SSTG, Clyde Marine contacted me saying they wanted me for interview (this took them around 3 months to do, and by that time I had already had two interviews with SSTG and my sponsor) so I had to decline the interview with them. I was prepared for an interview with Clyde in case SSTG didn't want me.

Just like everything else in life, have a back up plan. I was lucky my plan A was successful.

        Re: Applying for Cadetships

I have applied to a few (4) companies so far, so as size4 says, keep your options open. Also some companies ask on their forms "Have you applied to any other shipping companies and if so, which ones?" I have been honest there on my forms, not sure if I did right thing there but still. I have an interview in Jan with RFA and Iwork for them already as a Deckie! They know the score though... Good luck

Thanks guys. I have an interview with Clyde on Friday, they got back to me quite quickly (just under 2 weeks).
But while i am at college i will have to pay for rent at home also. As i have read that Clyde don't pay the best i would like to have more options. Will also be working my behind off between now and Jan!

Apply to SSTG, they pay for accommodation on top of your cadet wage, which is one of the highest going!

I applied for 4 I think. SSTG, Maersk, Clyde and Cunard. Though after being accepted by 3 of the companies I went with SSTG at the end

                          Re: Applying for Cadetships

In my interview at SSTG, the guy asked if I had applied to any other companies, I must have looked a bit nervous as I said yes and listed them. Since he reassured by saying that he would have been dissappointed if I hadn't applied to anywhere else since doing so showed that I had put in the time to research and do all the applications, showed that I was serious about wanting to be in the merchant navy.
