  • Hi applying to clyde tonight however had some questions hopefully someone could clear.

I am basically chancing my luck this year with a few companies as I am only 16 and wouldn't mind waiting another year. I had a few questions I hoped someone could clear. There are certain companies with clyde I don't want to work. I really would like a job with royal carribean (yes I no the chances are slim and very competitive) but this is the company I would like if I went with clyde. Would I be able to specifically ask that I would only want to work with royal carribean? Has anyone had experience with Royal carribean?

Also which companies with clyde employ cadets when they complete their training.

    thanks

robert (I already applied directly to Northern marine)
Phase 5 SPD engine cadet at city of Glasgow college. Doing a a combined motor and steam ticket.

You can specify a "preference" of what companies you wish, however the contract you agree too is in most cases with Clyde Marine - not the sponsor. No you can't state "If I don't get XXXX then I don't want it" - you won't know who your company is until you turn up at college.

Some of Clyde's companies - I believe Royal are one of them (could be wrong), certainly their other cruise company does - interview potential cadets that Clyde are considering for them prior to the start of the college, as they wish to decide who they take on - however, I don't know if they confirm anything before college starts.

"Which companies usually take on their cadets on completion" would be a good question to ask at the interview!

PS. You wont get Royal if your only 16.

I had my interview a few days ago - it went well and I have been put on the list for Sept intake. I asked alot of questions and was actually pretty impressed, I had heard some bad things from people but went in with an open mind and bar the ?3,000 "drop out" clause (which to be honest I can see the logic of) they seemed completely OK.

You can specify 3 choices when you're offered a contract. The contract doesn't come into effect till your first day of college (important).

Cruise companies almost always interview again to make sure you are a "corporate" match, from what i hear there does tend to be quite a bit of customer facing involved. They tell you within a week usually if they'll take you. So if you have a bunch of second interviews and aren't lucky then you will be able to withdraw if you really want without having to pay the ?3,000. Although it is worth remembering that these 3 years are just "training" if you like and the world is your oyster if you pass! At least that's what I'm thinking haha

Rookie, I had my training with RCL. I moved away from them as fast as I possibly could. You'd definitely be better off on tankers. Cadet training on RCL is very badly structured. Unless you like working with the Engine foreman for 6 months, learning how to buff deck plating and perfecting how to clean corners with a long stick and a rag, stay away!

As for other cruise companies, I have heard good things.

              EDIT:-

Another thing to consider with RCL, when you start, as a 3rd engineer on board (technically a 4th/5th engineer they have Chief->chief Jr->1st->2nd->3rd), you CAN NOT be promoted until you obtain your 2nd Eng license. Ergo your stuck bottom of the ladder.

This are only my thoughts and opinions. Personally I was happy to decline the job offer, and I let their company rep know exactly what I thought of their on board training scheme.

It's not my place to say just where
              the boat's allowed to go

It's not my right to dock the boat
              or even clang the bell

              But let the damn thing
start to sink AND SEE WHO CATCHES HELL!

In my opinion SSTG are one of the better training organisations. Once you've passed the interview you are given a list of the companies recruiting through SSTG and you then choose as few/many as you want and send them a list in order of your preferences. They then look down your list and try and place you with your preferred choice, if they can't, they move down the list to the next one and so on. They also tell you your sponsor before the start of college.

Cannot recommend SSTG strongly enough. They're very professional, won't mess you around and are very transparent in regards to your sponsor company.

I agree that SSTG are a good choice. However, I would still try and get sponsorship with a company that sponsors their own cadets before going with one of the agencies.

Has anyone had an experience with Anglo Eastern. How does it work, is it like an agency. Also what are the companies within it and is there a possibility for a job at the end.
                          Thanks

What you said about promotion is not strictly correct. Currently onboard Splendour and there are 2nd Engineers with Class 4 license, as they are working only as watch keeping engineers.

Don't limit yourself apply to everyone. First priority is to get a cadetship everything else you can worry about later.
