  • Medical question

I recently went for a hearing test and was told that I may require a hearing aid. Will this in any way affect my chances of getting a cadetship? Do they test your hearing in the medical?
(My hearing isnt terrible and hasn't ever caused me any real problems . It has only been a minor inconvenience at times).

    Re: Medical question

You need to pass a medical exam called an ENG1 to get a cadetship. This does involve a hearing test.

What the requirements say about hearing aids I'm not sure. They could say you are free to work as long as you always have a hearing aid. Also there might be some difference based on whether you want to do deck/engine/electro.

I'd ring an ENG1 approved doctor and see what the deal is.

Hope it works out for you

I wouldnt think so. If the hearing aid makes you hear to a good standard then I see why not. Thats what they are there for

        Re: Medical question

Having recently done a medical, I can say it does involve a hearing test. For me (I'm an engineer) it was trying to hear a series of three, single digit, random numbers over varying levels of white noise in the background- this to me did sound a lot like an engine so it may be directly related to my path. I failed it the first time but he gave me another go and I got through it.
If you fail only that part of the test, then you may be given a pass but with restrictions. This will allow you to continue but you may only be able to work o certain ships (say those with out a lot of background noise-tbh can't think of any atm-; or some other restriction)
Although tbh if the hearing aid allows you to hear noises at all freuencies then it should be no trouble.

        Will

I just looked at a test on some website and I think its the same as the one your talking about, with the white noise and 3 numbers in the background. Gets tricky towards the end doesnt it!!!?

The test I did in my medical was : you sit in a booth with some big headphones on and listen out for a very faint high pitched beep. Like when you hear a ringing in your ears. As the doc increases the volume you push a button as soon as you hear it. Turns out that my left ear is slightly worse than my right....I had no idea.

Ive heard somebody else's test consisted of the doctor creeping up behind them whispering.......creepy.

I dont think I got any hearing tests, i was just asked, can you hear proberly. ALthough as a deck cadet The eye sight test was pretty hard, the letters and numbers were very very small.

And Naaatan did you ask the other guy was his doctor licensed or checked out? lol

Haha. I can't even remember where I heard that about creeping doctors, might be from somebody on here. Or it might have been the first act of some really dodgy porn film.

Your lucky you didn't get a full-on hearing test. Suppose some doctors are more thorough than others.

                      Re: Medical question

Honestly, in my medical on Tuesday (27/07)... the doctor done a hearing test by asking me to cover my left ear and standing by my right side and whispering 2 numbers from a certain distance.

I was thinking WTF... surely this isnt an approved way of testing someones hearing, since the loudness of each doctors whisper is obviously a variable!

Spoke to a mate who has medicals for his job (non sea based) and he said its normally a series of recorded bleeps, you stand x meters away from speaker and say when you can hear a bleep, they get quieter and quieter until there is no noise and you have to get so far through them to 'pass'.

Was that the Clyde Marine in-house doc at Govan?

There is no MCA prescribed methodology for the ENG1. There are certain aspects of your health that the doctor must investigate in determining whether you are fit for sea service, but it is left up to him as to exactly how he goes about it. Hence the highly variable reports on experiences of ENG1 examinations.

Yeah that was the place. Doctor Paice i think his name was. Nice enough chap.

I've no issues with my hearing so it isn't a problem... but i assume someone with ropey hearing could still easily make out the numbers he whispered.

I didn't get the hearing test either, the doc just used something to look into your ears with.
