  • biology as my science qualification

I have been trying to apply to other companies but the ones I've looked at all ask for physics or chemistry or a dual award science (not sure what this is).

So I was wondering if anyone could point me in the direct of companies who accept biology as a science. I have loads of qualifications with 4 credit 1's, 4 credit 2's. I have 4 highers, an HNC grade A and a 2:1 degree but this simple thing rules me out based on the companies entry requirements.

What is your HNC and your degree in? I should have thought that if they were science or engineering in nature that would supersede GCSE physics or chemistry. Could be worthwhile contacting the companies directly or speaking to an actual human on the telephone. It's often easier to explain the situation that way. Failing that the other option would be to enrol on a fast track GCSE course for sciences or maths.

A dual science is when you take all three subjects and get a double award science ( not specific) where as you can do all of the subjects as individuals and get three awards(specific) or as you have one done in biology.
My guess is if you do the dual you would have to cover some Physics and Chemistry which is why they accept it.
Giving a human a call is the best option! Sometimes there are recruiters that pop up on the site and may say what they would accept.

Dual science is an English thing. Do you have maths?

Have you looked at the careers at sea website and looked at each of the sponsor requirements because there are some which seem to suggest differently for FD, this was from Clyde, SSTG and Anglo Eastern. Might be worth calling these ones first.
As I don't know the scottish system etc and you don't say what subjects you have it's difficult to say. Though I would hope a degree in soc science is worth a bit more than 120 ucas points to recruiters and colleges! We have had similar things pop up before and I'm sure it's been checked with colleges to make sure they'd accept prior qualifications and it's been ok, but it's all very individual.

            Entry requirements

HND: GCSEs at grade C or above in English, Physics (or Combined Science) and at least two other subjects, plus grade B or above in Maths.

FD: 120 UCAS points in unspecified A levels or Scottish Highers plus GCSE grades at A or B/Scottish Standard Grades at Credit level in English, Maths and a Science based subject.

given you have a degree, you might find a company willing to fast track you (god I hate that term) assuming the MCA will give you credits for courses already done, but this is on a case by case basis.

The Borg (Maersk) do fast track in some cases otherwise you probably are a bit over qualified while being under qualified in one key area "the sciences" there is actually some physics and chemisty in the courses (although it is in stealth form) but little or no biology, also (if I remember rightly) physics and chemisty use maths similar to that used in the Marine courses (prepared to be shot down over that statement it has been a while)

See if any companies are looking for fast track cadets that might be the way forward, otherwise some of the companies may be interested in you but it'll take some hunting about.

No I do not report things from here to them as they are quite able to come and read this stuff for themselves.

I've never heard of a fast track process except for people with engineering degrees.

Yeah I applied with Clyde as they classify biology as a science.

                  My qualifications are:

                  intermediate 2 Maths - A

                  Higher modern studies - A
                  Higher drama - B

They do seem to prefer physics but it's a preference not a requirment. I had higher chemistry and biology a
higher modern studies and maths b.
                    Int 2 English b
                    And a degree.
You will probably be ok. But it's not just about the qualifications make sure you have a good CV and sell yourself.

P's chiefy where's the chemistry? I can see the physics but can't think of any chemistry on the course.

for engineers......combustion is chemistry, how fuel burns, what it makes and in what quantities

for deck.......not so sure BUT I think it's the maths component of the science

Fair point you can reduce almost anything to chemistry. I ment more there is no part of the course you would struggle in by having a poor grasp of chemistry.

I think it's just the maths in Physics and Chemistry is more than Biology, but having never done Biology I wouldnt honestly know for certain
