  • Paying for accommodation

    Hello

I've just recieved my joining pack from SSTG, to go to South Tyneside to do the Engineering Foundation Degree. In it, it has joining instructions for the Dr Winterbottom (who seriously thought of that name for a halls of residence) Hall, which says the first 4 weeks of accomidation are to be paid for in advance.

It also says that this is payable on the day of registration (5th September 2010) unless the sponsoring company (I presume this is SSTG) is paying the costs, if they are you have to check this before you begin registration with the Clerk...it also says that proof may be needed to confirm this.

Does anyone know if SSTG sort all of this out with the Hall's, or do I need to ask for proof Having just called them about half an hour ago with another question I'd rather find out here if I can

    Thankyou

    Re: Paying for accomidation

Dr Winterbottom, was a famous seafarer type in Shields and set up the marine school and college and his legacy pays (to this day) for a lot of other stuff that happens at the college.....dosnet detract from it being a bloody silly name though

In answer to the other Q phone SSTG they would rather a 1000 easily answered questions than you getting all wound up about something or nothing! Also does your contract etc not state whois paying accom fees? Might be worth reading your job offer / contract

No I do not report things from here to them as they are quite able to come and read this stuff for themselves.

SSTG do pay the accomidation costs (I hope so, it's what the interviwer told me!!), just not clear if they're paying the advanced costs for me or not I'll give them a call!

I would suggest then they will pay the "advanced costs" though they arent really advance costs, you are supposed to pay for accom 1 month in advance BUT you get paid 1 month in arrears, was the same when I was a cadet and a royal pain in the butt

Same story with the uniform gave them a ring and they said uniform is company specific regarding who pays for it.
sometimes you pay and they reimburse or they order pay. The woman on the phone said its best to drop your training advisor an email.

I believe SSTG arrange this with the college for you - so you shouldn't have to pay and claim it back.

With SSTG you have to pay for everything yourself and then send them a form with receipts attached and they reimburse you. Normally take a few working days.

At Plymouth you will have to pay for the accommodation most probably in 3 payments (Sept, Jan, Apr). Then you can claim back ?60 per week at the end of each month. You can only claim for the weeks you are actually at uni so you will most likely start paying for your accommodation a couple weeks before you start Uni, therefore you lose out on a couple of weeks. You can't claim for the Easter and Xmas break either unless your doing an STCW course during that period.

You get ?1000 within the first few weeks of each term straight into your bank account, they pay your tuition fees straight to the Uni and all the STCW stuff is paid for, they are the only things I can recall not having to send forms off for.

It's not as much of a ball ache as it sounds, you soon get used to sending the forms off!

ahh I see, makes a bit more sense now then. I think I have a limit of about 100 quid a week for accomodation. and that ?1000 might come in abit handy then!
                      thanks northern

                        No worries irishbhoy!

You should have no problems with ?100 a week unless you're after a Deluxe en-suite room with all the trimmings! Look out for Pilgrim, Francis Drake and Mary Newman halls, they're easily the best halls. Radnor and Robbins are pretty decent too. Avoid Gilwell if you can, they're the oldest halls at the Uni and you can really tell! There are a few halls run by Unite too, they are further away from campus but still good places and I'm only talking about a 5-10 minute walk away anyway! I lived in Pilgrim halls which are conveniently placed about 1 mins walk away!

I think the general en-suite rooms are about 110 pound a week which is good enough.. tel me this, when I sign for accomodation it is like a 40 week contract. In my first year I have been told I will be joining my first ship in february. What happens to my accomodation then? Do i have to pay it myself as i wont be at the college?

                            Re: Paying for accomidation

Right, SSTG sort everything out with the college, except for one thing, the ?100 which you have to pay yourself. The joining instructions said you should bring proof that SSTG will pay, I doubt this is actually necessary but I'm going to take a copy of the email with me.

Since im with Sea Truck Ferries, I'm given SSTG tie's and epaulettes as the company logo, otherwise its plain white shirts and dont even need a blazer.

(Note, this is for South Shields/South Tyneside, other places might be entierly different!)
